Sorry for using so much forum space with my "vocals and guitar" post. I guess the bottom line is I can't monitor the vocals I'm recording and hear the music at the same time in either RB, BB, or Audacity? I'm using a Toshiba Satellite lap top. What do I have to buy, I'll just go do it. This is driving me nuts. I have worked to learn the new BB,and have a handle on the music so I thought I would try some vocals, and am now frustrated that I can't hear them being recorded. Do I need more software or hardware? What kind and how much?
EDIT:
It looks like if I have an ASIO driver, I can toggle a monitor input in RB. Should I download one, would that solve my problem of not being able to hear my vocals being recorded in RB?

What exactly is your complete signal chain from mic to laptop input, including the laptop input?

BTW -- I have a good friend who uses a Toshiba laptop and the M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB sound device together with BIAB, PT and RB. He had troubles at first, but after shaking down the system with a few tweaks he is making music and using that laptop in live performance gigs, too.

Well first of all, it might be me who has to apologize if allready someone needs to about making that thread "vocals and guitar" so long. But my question first of all would be now: Did you follow the exact routing advise I gave you? In theory, the setup you have should not be of any problem at all.

Here is my setup at the present. I'll explain what I do or recording and then for live. First the equipment.
1. Toshiba laptop with RealTech built in card
2. Audigy2ZS Notebook card in the pcmcia slot
3. Behringer 802 mixer. Has 2 Mic channels, 2 stereo line channels, 1 aux send, 1 stereo aux return.
WDM drivers no ASIO
Now the cabling. Stays the same for both.
1. Mic in Mic #1
2. Bass in Mic #2 with DI
3. Headphone out from RealTech to Stereo Channel 5/6
4. Line out from Audigy to Stereo aux return
5. Aux send to line in on Audigy.
Real Band Audio Setup:
1. Output Driver Real Tech
2. Input Driver Audidgy
PFL the Mic channel to get a good signal on the mixer. Do the same with any other input my case bass. This applies to both scenarios.
Recording:
Note: Your headphones are plugged into the mixer!
1. Select the track you want to record
2. open the view meters
3. Using the Aux send for the channel keep turning up until you have a good signal. Some yellow. NO RED
4. I set the recording in the Audidgy to Line In
5. I enable effects in the Audidgy
6. I adjust the Aux return on the mixer until I get just a little effects.
7. Make sure the music is at a comfortable level and matches the vocal input
8. Hit record audio and sing away
This setup lets you monitor your vocals with effects but records dry as it should be.
For live playing my setup anyway.
The audidgy now is used as an effects unit.
1.Turn off effects in the Audidgy.
2. Open Sonar with 1 Audio track.
3. Insert the Lexicon reverb in the track, choose your reverb and set to be totally wet
4. Arm the track.
5. Adjust the Aux send and return as you would with any effects unit.
I do it this way as I can have a nice Lexicon reverb unit in software. There is no latency that you can here.
This also lets my live setup be just:
1. Computer
2. Mixer
3. Bass
4. Mic
5. Speakers

Gene: Maybe you've figured it out by now, but my guess is you don't need to buy any more gear besides the Behringer in order to monitor vocals without re-recording the feed from the computer. Here is a tip I clipped sometime back, from "Robo or RobertB, but his 802 with in and outputs is shown nicely in the picture via the URL. The clip: Papa Joe, in the applet mixer window for the Delta 44 there is a choice called Mon Mixer, change to that and you should be good to go. Also if you front the delta with a small mixer you can monitor from the mixer and avoid that problem altogether. Here is a diagram and tutorial from my website that shows how to hook up a mixer to a sound card, it would work great with any delta, i used it on my Behringer to delta 24/96 card. http://z8.invisionfree.com/GAPers/index.php?showtopic=52Luck, Brad

Ah if only I had that mixer I could have done it just as clear! I think Brallan's input should help you out more. I think it shows setup A, that I explained. If still in doubt or want to know more, I have made some tutorials that may help you further and/or give you more info visually. I amkind of blurry to find other words. It is hard to know where you get stranded. This is why I am trying a different approach. I made you some tutorials which you could watch. Maybe a visual thing is easier to pick up. There are three tutorials I made. 1: Explaining the mixer ins and outs, by showing the routing. 2. Explains the Software setups 3. Explains some trouble shooters. On this moment they are uploading so it might be a little while before they are be able to run. If you rather would see them on your computer with more control I could send them to you if you want. 1. The picture Brallan sent was just as Abaudio had said in one of his posts. The part that threw me, was he said even going into the cd/tape input with the BB music, it would still go OUT thru the mains. (I think you said they run parallel). I din't want the music going back to the computer. Brallan says with the cd/tape to ctrl room button, only the new things, vocals guitar etc., will go out.. That is perfect. I will try it today.. Today I will get this.

I like your setup. Don't know what an Audidgy is. Assuming it is an effects unit? Perfect, I have a hardware effects unit I can hook up as you have mentioned above, when I get the other part handled. That will be perfect.
I have not had this mixer for long. Only a week. All I was trying to do is control what goes out. That's why at first I came in to one channel with BB, panned left and put a mic into another channel and panned right, because I knew I could control what went OUT at the mains that way for sure. It was hard to work with that way, because the stereo field was so sterile.
Mac;
I think today I will;
1. Line out of the puter to cd/tape in on mixer.
2. line out of mixer from mains to the mic in of puter.
3. Use the cd/tape to ctrl room button (thank you all for re-iteration)
4. Go into RB and look for a signal
5. Hit record.
Boy, what a week. At least I got Silver (Maytag) tones out of retirement.

Ah that may have caused the misunderstanding there. Actually my setup doesnot have a feedback(no going back to computer again). Either I made a typo naming the output wrong somewhere, or you mixed up main out put with controlroom output. As long as you keep the CD/Tape to CTRL released, there will be no feedback. The parallelpart was about the main output and cd out yes, but with the released CD/Tape in, it is not going back.

It is the same as setup A. What also is the same: You need the CD/Tape to MIX released. If not, the signal goes back to the computer.

Getting there! Almost right:
@ 2: into the line in of your computer, not the mic in.
@ 3: yes press that one, ANDDDD: RELEASE ctrl to MIX!
All the rest you said is correct.
