Greetings folks, I just saw a video that blew my mind! It is Jordan Rudess (Keyboardist for Dream Theatre) Playing Flute, Trumpet and other Physically Modeled Instruments by blowing into the Microphone of an Apple iPhone. After picking my jaw up off the floor, I realized I could use this not only as a practice tool with BIAB, but in Live Performance. Here is the Youtube video address: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gn_uBjKTnkQCurious if anyone is using this already, and your thoughts on using this with BIAB? Ed

OK, here is my update. After some more checking, I have good and bad news: 1. Wivi Band is not MIDI, just audio. 2. No Remote output (I didnt see the cable Jordan was using, my bad) 3. Wivi Band was $10, now its $50 (Although still a great bargain) The way I see it, you can still hook up a miniplug to 1/4 cable, run the output of the iPhone into your mixer, and have a great sounding, no latency instrument and cell phone at the same time......amazing. Now if they could just get rid of the cable, it would be like remote MIDI! After going to the Wallander site, I heard this demo that really knocked me out. This is the 1st time I´ve heard sax´s and trumpets that sounded totally authentic. The lead trumpet screaming is amazing. Keep in mind, this is from the more expensive Brass and Sax Libraries. Still, this blows everything else out of the water! The best part is that these instruments run with very little CPU and RAM footprint. I was reading where you could run at least 100 tracks without any lag on the average laptop. Try that with Sample Libraries. http://www.zshare.net/audio/57189960ed802ee2/Enjoy! Ed

Sure sounds amazing. I guess you have to learn to play a small keyboard, and hope the phone don't ring while you're recording. Surprised they don't have a harmonica sound.

I would like to try this thing. The technique of changing octaves looks similar to my wind controller, and maybe even more accurate. Where would you go to try it, though? Apple Store? AT&T store? Maybe Best Buy? You would have to bring the cable and a PA, and it's not like going to Guitar Center where you expect to hear noodling. Ed sent me another demo featuring Tower of Power horn voicings and some spectacular lead trumpet. Go here: http://www.zshare.net/audio/57189960ed802ee2/Wish they had it for my Blackberry...

Hello, Glad to see this thread picking up steam. I don´t think most of us have realized the amazing new possiblities for this with BIAB. I am already considering buying the iPhone and Wivi Band to use on my live gigs instead of my Akai EWI USB. For those of you who aren´t convinced that these instruments are the TOTAL bomb, check out this short demo of the Soprano Sax playing ¨My Favorite Things¨. I´m very picky when it comes to the realism of Sampled or PM instruments, I doubt you will be able to tell it from a real Sax: http://www.robertosoggetti.com/SopranoImpro.mp3Enjoy! Ed

The caveat has to be the constant moisture going into the mic. I'd not be surprised if it caused problems. Maybe someone will come up with another way, you'd think if you can do that with a pinhole mic you must be able to do it with a real mic and interface without having an actual wind controller.

There should be no reason for moisture.
Breath control is derived by blowing *across* the mic -- or inhaling across it.
I think they must be using the rush signal to control as a factor of envelope and amplitude.
At any rate, unless you slobber while you whistle, moisture should not be a problem here. Lips do not -- or shoul;d not -- contact the iphone or ipod device at all.

I think the caveat will be what else you have to pay for that you may never use in order to get the instrument. For instance I like my phone to be able to make and receive calls period, but with the Iphone I understand that you have to pay for all of the options. Heck my son just got one and he has to pay another 30.00 per month just because it is an Iphone.
The price of the phone, say 200.00 and the WIVI B at 59.99 are not a bad investment. But if I have to start adding internet fees and special Iphone fees and the good Lord only know what other fees the cell phone boys come up with, well then it may become a lot more pricy that what it looks like at first glance. But I'd still love to have the capability of all of those instruments.

You don't have to use n iPhone.
Certain models of the iPod player can be used also.
Sounds like people aren't visiting the Wivi website and reading up...

Funny, when I breath on my glasses, a mirror or anything similar I see condensation. No condensation there, just a point. Now a cold horn at a street parade seems to require regular opening of the condensation relief mechanism.
But I'm probably wrong because I usually am, just ask my wife.

Maybe a closer approximation of the potential problem would be a flute, since Mac said you blow across the iPhone mic. My flute certainly accumulates moisture inside the head joint. John, your wife plays flute, as I recall; ask her about that.

Flute mouthpiece will make a lot more condensation because there is no air gap between lips and mouthpiece.
I imagine that if you were to start using the thing ice cold, you could develop a bit of condensation in the right circumstances, though.
There likely is a slight moisture problem to be aware of here, electret condenser mics and moisture do not like each other, but many cellphone type devices, the mic element is covered by a very thin plastic sheet to stop that kind of moisture intrusion in everyday use anyway.
I certainly wouldn't let that prevent me from trying the thing.
Besides that, one could also hook up an external headset mic, as the webpage talks of, matter of fact, certain iPods, that is a must as the internal mic doesn't work above 8KHz. They mention that. External headset is cheap insurance if you are worried about the moisture problem.

Ha,cleaning her flute is a ritual that takes about 30 minutes. Awe inspiring stuff. i remember someguy telling Dr. Hank (Dr. Henry Meredith) about his spit valve..which set off a conversation about condensation, water vapour when you exhale, and how it's not Spit. It's a condesate releif mechanism. LOL. Concert Wednesday, Brass Band Gala next Saturday, busy week coming up. Details on our website, plumbingfactorybrassband. I hope the guy who's supposed to do it moved me outta the tuba section, I'm back on baritone....
Af far as the phone is concerned I have no idea how that wee hole makes a mic, but I suspect that it can be damaged. As to using the phone as a phone, with a data plan and phone costs it gets pricey.
I have a blackberry curve. It's paid for by someone else so they can get me if I need to check their building after hours. I found out that you can download google maps and let them play with the gps and I only have to pay for the data, not the service. Works great, I can see myself in downtown Toronto within 3 feet, and it gives me routes. Nice software..

You don't have to buy the iphone cellphone to use this software.
Apparently it also works on certain model iPod devices, those little mp3 players, also. With touchscreen, of course.
This may represent a way to get into the instrument at a better price, older model iPod Touch players have been sighted at used prices, I'm looking...
