This is amazing. My assistant in the office is a 26 year old guy who's been working for me since he was 19. I've been making noises about getting a new cell phone for a few weeks now and of course he knows all about every phone out there so I asked him this afternoon to tell me about the plans available for the iphone. He asks why because he knows I didn't have any interest in it before so I told him about playing a trumpet or sax on the phone. He gives me one of those totally dismissive looks with a little shake of the head and says you mean blowing on the mic and playing something? So what? His whole body language said dude, you're a musician and just finding out about this now? Where have you been??
Here we are a bunch of old farts getting all excited and the kids have known all about this for what, a year? Sigh.
Whatever, I think it's pretty cool and may wind up getting an iphone because of it.

Amazing thing again. I love it. And yeah I agree on the moistering problem it may cause, at least with blowing into the mic, since breathing, always is combined with moistere, not only when it is cold. And inhaling only would probably make me faint. But as Mac said it is possible to use it with an external mic, which of course solves that problem and which is a good tip, making me (almost) want to buy it. But yeah the size of it and it being relatively new, makes me wait and see. Even if it would not damage it the device right away, and even if it is protected by a sheet, I would never take such risk, since moistere and electronics just don't mix well. Being that close to the Ipod, is just like walking around in a foggy swamp, which in the end probably would damage any electronical device as well. My point is that it doesnot have to happen instantly, but the same as for smoking around equipment, which might not hurt the devices immediatelly, still you don't smoke in a studio, as you would not let the studio get moistered above a certain level either. BUT, nevertheless, back on topic: Great developments!

IPhones (cellphones in general also) are designed to suffer the elements.
I really don't think this moisture problem exists, an ice cold cellphone taken out of the car and used immediately would have more of a moisture problem and they survive, telling me that surely engineering has addressed this situation already.

Agree Mac I lived in Calgary, Canada for 10 years and was a full time player then. I drove all over the place in 20-30 below weather, had the van parked outside wide open while unloading everything and at first I was worried about exactly that, especially the keyboards but never had a moisture problem. In that kind of weather, the back of the van never warmed up and when I got the stuff inside, you could hardly touch it without gloves on, it was so cold. If there is a problem with the phone, that's what the insurance plan is for. Just replace it.

Time will tell. A device is usually manufactured to the lowest possible tolerance. We used to see this in fire investigations all the time, cheap parts, low expectations, poor testing.
My hypothisis is this, you watch how this is being played an you are blowing at a small hole. Now it's been 30 years since I took college level anatomy to qualify as an emergency medical tech, which was not at all as comprehensive as the a&p that people get now, however, I remember exhaled breath is over 90 percent water vapour which is why a person who is hyperventilating can loose so much water. And there exists in some measurable quantiies Hydrogen Peroxide and other gases, including particulate matter that forms part of the lining of your breathing system. And the temperature of the air expelled is always higher than ambient temperature unless you live somewhere very hot.
I'm curious is all. The exhalent is alkaline, (normally) and blown into such a small hole must have some deleterious effect. If I was starting to have problems with the thing I think I'd uninslall the applicaiton before sending it for warranty.
On the positive side the applicaiton looks interesting, I'm wondering how much practice you need in order to make it work, even if you have lots of various keyboard experience there must be a learning curve.
If I remember John Lennon played a melodica, there have been variations of that over the years, from button accordian models that I remember seeing. There was some jazzz player used one, I think Horner made them, a friend had one in high school.

It should not be blown into the hole, nor aimed directly at the mic hole.
It should be blown *across* the mic hole. From a distance away, not in contact.

Mac is correct. And IF the possibility of Mic moisture is an issue, the External Macally iMic looks very cool for $39.
Here is where I would love to see this going:
1. Bluetooth or Wireless MIDI integration, play your tracks right into your DAW of choice, or play and VST with it.
2. Trumpet fingerings and Valve tops. I just saw another iPhone app called ¨Trumpet¨that has 3 valve buttons. I have not heard the sounds yet.
3. An iPhone version of BIAB, allowing you to play your iPhone with BIAB. Of course, it would be hard to put any RTs or RDs on there, but a good GM soundfont would do the trick as a practice tool.
4. More sounds: Vibes, Acoustic & Jazz Guitar, etc.
my buddy in Victoria Canada just downloaded Wivi Band and he is loving it. He is a great jazz Trombone player, and picky about realizm, and says it rocks! Hey, for $4.99 its hard to go wrong.
Anyone else taking the bait?

Hey Wyndham,
Wivi Band will work with iPod Touch, but it does require an external mic. I´ve heard good reports about this. It might be a good idea to get the latest version of the Touch though.

Ed, there's a forum on their website and the question was asked about adding midi, interfacing with a DAW, etc and the answer was the processing power in an iphone/ipod is way too low for anything like that. For now anyway. If you want that functionality, you have to buy their software which is probably why they did this in the first place, to create interest in their full blown app.
