RIP Mr. Brubeck.
Did you know that "Take Five" was the first jazz song to sell one million copies!
When you are at the checkout line and they ask if you found everything say "Why, are you hiding stuff?"

So glad I got to see him at the Hollywood Bowl about 5 years ago. When I was 22 or so all my friends are listening to the Stones or Elvis and I'm listening to Brubeck and Jimmy Smith among others. I'll admit I got into jazz from Playboy. I wanted to be all sophisticated and get the hot chicks like Hef. I even bought a pipe but I hated it so bad even the thought of those swooning chicks didn't help.
A lot of legendary pianists were great and I love them and all that but Brubeck was really unique. Nobody played like him.

Aw, damn. When I got my very first cassette player, it came with a cassette of just the song "Take Five." I must've played that thing to death.

A little background on the album Take Five came out on: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_Out_%28album%29I saw him on the U of Fla campus (1975?). I believe his son was playing with him. I posted my Brubeck 5/4 tribute over in the User Showcase section -- Any one else got a 5/4 tune?

I got to see him in June 2009 at a beautiful venue in downtown Cleveland. I went with someone who was a good friend at the time (but has since moved away to get married) and when they went into Take 5, the deal was that I was to call another friend in Oklahoma and hold the phone up so she could hear it.
I remember the line of the night was when my date leaned over and said "Look. There's nothing even close to one brown hair up there!" I think the youngest guy was probably 60, and Dave was 88 then. He had to be helped to the piano, and then he sat down and broke into Sunny Side Of The Street, and from there he segued into Somewhere Over The Rainbow, and just totally set the place on fire! Standard after standard came off that stage, with Bobby Millitello playing a great alto sax. One by one the songs went by.. Jimmy McHugh, Harold Arlin, Frank Loesser, Cole Porter, George Gershwin.... just an amazing night of music performed by a group of truly great players. My hands actually hurt from applauding so loudly and so often. He REALLY got me with WHat Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life!
A night I will never forget!

He was assisted walking out at the Bowl too and looked old and frail. I was disappointed he didn't do Blue Rhondo but I understood it. It's just too powerful a piece for him to handle any more but like you heard what he did was still great. The Bowl was sold out and the crowd was very exicited with huge ovations.
He was a true legend and now I need to get back into my Best of Brubeck piano book.

He did it at the show I was at! It was an amazing set list. They featured Bobby Militello on The Very Thought Of You and it was downright inspiring. Just beautiful. And funny to see him play the alto because he's such a big guy.
Only thing that would have made it better for me would be if they had done Spain and 500 Miles High.

I got to see him in the early sixties Down Under, with my girlfriend of the time. We were super privileged to go back stage to meet the band and my girlfriend went up to Paul Desmond and said "Hello Mr.Brubeck, I love your music". Talk about a quick exit, stage left.
