They don't all sound just like Clapton or whatever, but you will have to work with them a bit. You will have to search the style discs, (a major job) and look around. For instance there are some Neil styles that sound (bass line and drums at least) just like Hurricane, and others. That is the way it is in any of the styles..Sometimes I read the example window, pick one and say, "Man this doesn't sound like Brown Sugar, or whatever." But by the time you use the drums and bass, kill the rest and add some appropriate Real Tracks, it dials in nicely. Mostly it seems like if at all, they FEEL like an artist, but don't always SOUND exactly like them. You are not going to get Crossroads or Tears in Heaven with a click of the button. You could always download a MIDI track of a song you like, import it into BB and then you have some realism. Add some RT, and you will be happy.

Dude Band in a a box 12 for mac has no RT, unless he upgrades and runs under parallels or something similar.

The new Mac version of band in a box is supposed to go to beta soon, and catch up with the rest. Probably about the time Mac drops its OS and makes a new one no one can port to again. None the less that version is about 5 years behind Band in a Box for PC.

It stands for Real Tracks. Go the PG music home page, if you can, and listen to the demo's. I think they are part way down, and on the right side. I have a PC, and was not aware that Mac users did not have these features, or at least older versions don't support it. I bought this PC lap top for a little over $350.00. But the towers are sometimes even cheaper if you hit a best buy sale or something.

SC-50 is OLD technology. Cheezy even, by today's standards.

A Ketron SD2 orchestral wizard would certainly sound a lot better.

Thanks Mac. Is the Ketron SD2 for macintosh? is that an external piece of equipment or internal?

f6f6

I found it.

Thanks to all so far for the help. it looks like I'm going to have to Buy a PC if I'm seriously going to use BIAB. That's going to be expensive

External hardware MIDI box, can work with any standard MIDI output via standard MIDI cable to its MIDI input. Unplug your SC-50 and plug in the Ketron in its place.

pgmusic sells them. Check it out on their hardware page.

Try listening to the Blues, Rhythm and Blues and some of the Rock styles at http://www.nortonmusic.com/styledemo.html

They are recorded in low-fidelity and they were made using either an old Sound Blaster card on a Win98SE computer or the VSC that comes with BiaB.

Personally I think how the parts are played are more important than the tone. After Robert Johnson on a 78 RPM record still sounds like the blues.

And yes, all my styles are available for the Mac.

One of the problems with styles the total amount it would take to produce all the Clapton ways of playing a guitar. There are only a few styles that are Clapton. And they all have jazz overtones in them. Not beating jazz up here Mates. It's just the way it is. But things are getting better all the time.

Norton has a lot of good styles for both PC and Mac and, if they're still in business, Finetuned makes styles also, so the sky's the limit. Also, I'm not sure but Coyote Forte may be available for the Mac. If it is it's only $40 and sounds fantastic.

There is a however to all this. Concerning the jab that was thrown at you about Mac's changing its OS, that could easily be true. That's the main reason the Mac version is so far behind the PC. When Mac changed its OS the whole Mac version of the software got put on hold. As mentioned it is a very stable OS now and they are coming out with a new beta version of BIAB soon. So don't throw your Mac away just yet and go running out to buy a new PC. Just be patient and wait and see what the Pg team comes up with. The Mac, as far as operation and power go, is the better computer over all. But it's still lacking in much needed software that the entire industry isn't providing for it. One of the reasons, I suspect, Steve changed the machines over to Intell, so as to be able to run a double OS side by side. (Smart move there Steve)

Do check on the Forte and see if there is a Mac version available. It uses gigasamples for its sounds. Most are fantastic. Some I don't like. Since I'm a PC user I have the Real Tracks and have real instruments available for creation.

Hope this is helpful to you.

f6^2,

Don't know where you live, but these Micro Center refurbs could be just the thing. They have a 90-day warranty. Make sure you get one with recovery disks so you can reinstall the OS if necessary.

I am looking at this midline unit myself. Add a second drive, mix and pour . . .

Well if you decide not to wait, I think Ryszard's tip mght give a cheap way out. A second hand doesn't cost all that much. I even ran Biab for a few days as a test on my old computer which is win98SE, 1200Mhz AMD Duron, 512Mb RAM. Not really a heavyweight champion to say the least, but BiaB worked pretty good there too. Still my modern computer is in the end better, but just to give an idea...Those type of computers and even better ones would be not costing all that much at all...
