I have just purchased and installed BIAB 2013. For now, I plan to use it primarily for accompaniments for my violin playing, something else that is new to me. But I can see how my piano playing will benefit from the ear training programs and simply from playing along with the tracks.
I have a Yamaha Clavinova connected to my laptop-a really cool setup, thanks to the help of a good friend.
I can see that the forums will be a great place to gain knowledge and insight into the host of things I can do with BIAB and I look forward to a long, musical journey.
Wish me luck!

Welcome to the forums - again. We sure need more jazz and blues violinists.

I have a Yamaha DGX 305. Pretty basic, but with some features I like. I have an old laptop running Win 98. It sits on the Yamaha. It wont do most of the latest programs, but it runs many of the PG music just fine. I have an old version of BiaB, some of the piano master classes and some of the performance programs like "The New Age Pianist."
These programs use a decades-old protocol called MIDI. MIDI is the language in which BiaB (and other programs) send instructions to the keyboard. It makes very low demands on the computer, so this combination of computer and keyboard works great.

Ah, somebody with almost the same set-up.
I don't think I quite know what to do the New Age Pianist, have been exploring it. One could print out the music and play along; wonder if there's a way to change the tempo in that program.
I have lots of music in another music program (recorded from my Clav), I'm told I can play them in BIAB. So, I'll work on learning that, have everything in the same place.
So much to learn....thanks for being there.

Changing tempo is one of the sliders in the upper left.
Try this: With the notation screen showing, stop playback. Then press INS and DEL on the NUMBER PAD. The cursor advances and retreats by one chord each time.

In BiaB, try FILE>OPEN MIDI FILE. Try the same with the songs in the New Age Pianist. This works with any file of the extension "MID."
It works even better in Real Band.

I did manage to open my Midi files and played a couple songs. But when I'm done, I see no place to close out of them. When I exit out of BIAB and turn off the computer I want to make sure everything's closed. I guess I don't understand that by going from song to song, whether I'm leaving files opened that need to be closed.
YOu'll have to pardon me, I'm also learning how to get around in a computer, still have a lot to learn with BIAB.
I'll soon have the forum smoking with my questions.

Hi clav,
When you use Band in a Box, you can load and play songs to your heart's content, and when you close down Band in a Box, nothing will be left hanging around.
Have Fun,

When you load a new song, the current one is closed, assuming it has been saved. If it has not been saved, you will receive a warning asking if you want to save it before loading another. In either event, no song file is left open.
Of course, as with any computer file, if you haven't saved it and your computer crashes, you may lose the unsaved changes or get a corrupted file (rare in BIAB, in my experience), so save your work often.

BiaB works differently from many other programs. Most programs have an "Open File" and "Close File" commands. BiaB does not. There is an "Open File" command, but no "Close File."

In addition to playing and printing music from the New Age Pianist, and the others in the Pianist series (blues, Latin. ,,,), you can learn more about the genre. The various songs can be played by category and there is text about the tone, the composer and player, and style.
To underscore what others have said, you can play any midi file in BIAB, and just as good, you can export any BIAB file to a midi file.
Keep at it Clav.

HI, I'm also new to BIAB , native French, I had a look on the "French forum" but did not find any usefull info and the forum doesn't seem to be very active... I hope my "dumb question" will find an answer in this worldwide forum. I also use a Clavinova (CGP1000) that will be connected to a laptop. But I first would like to find out how to play the realbook songs with realtracks. Each time I enter a file, the style works well with the correct chords but I cannot assign a realtrack to the melody or the solo without generating a new song that modifies the original realbooks'theme. I would appreciate any help: Claude

Hi Claude,
Realtracks cannot play a specific note group such as a Melody.
You must enter the Melody yourself on the Melody track, either using step note-entry, the qwerty keyboard wizard, or, likely the best way in your case, by Recording the Melody from the Thru track using your Clavinova. Then Save. It will be a MIDI track, of course, but with the use of other accompaniment tracks as Realtracks, quite often the sound of a single MIDI track on the Melody sounds much more realistic with Realtrack backing.
