I am a novice musician and a fairly new BiaB user, so pre-apologies if this is a question with an obvious answer, though my browsing through Help topics and forum did not get what I was looking for.

I am working on "Begin the Beguine" which is generally broken into four sections: A (32 bars), B (16 bars), C (16 bars) and D (32 bars). I would like to put those little place holders on the lead sheet, so I can easily navigate. In the Real Book, etc, the section letter is usually put inside a little box.

Is something like this possible in BiaB? I probably don't have the correct music vocabulary to properly query the help section (and I read about toggling the A & B section, but I need more), so I hope this bit of a ramble is understandable to you folks.

Thanks in advance for your help

Claudia

Hi Claudia,

No apology is necessary. If you don't know the answer to a question, you should always feel free to ask.

The process isn't too complicated.

  • Go to "Notation Mode" by left-clicking on the note (#1).
  • Right-click on the stave where you'd like the section letter to be (#2). the letter will be placed where you right-click.
  • Select "Section Letters" from the pop-up menu (#3).
  • Select the letter you'd like.
  • If you want to remove the letter, repeat the above process; this time right-clicking on the letter and selecting "remove" from the list of available letters.

Hope this helps,
Noel

Hi Noel

Unfortunately the "Section Letters" isn't displayed in the pop-up. Everything is the same except after "Staff Roll Mode" there is one of those dividers and then "Edit Current Chord" underneath the divider. Notation Mode is clicked, and this is BiaB for Windows Version 2012 (350) running on a Windows 7 machine.

Does it matter what kind of file you are working with? This is a .MGX file, though why that should make a difference, I have no idea.

You can also Rightclick in the Notation Edit view and select, "Section Text" and just type in the one capital letter there.

Or actually label them, if desired. "Bridge"

Claudia, if it isn't in the pop-up menu, what version of BIAB are you using? (Help, About)

Hi Claudia,

It's possible to do this in 2012. I just had a look at the Help manual (found under the Start Menu | Band In A Box) and there's some information about it on page 242. It's a little bit different but it will do the job. It's called "Section Text Event".

All the best,
Noel

Hi Claudia,

When I said I had a look at the Help Manual, I should have added that it was the manual for 2012 (I have them all dating back to 2006). Have a look at page 242. It should help.

Below is an image from the 2012 manual.

  • To align the box with the first beat of the bar put #1 = bar num., #2 = 1, #3 = 0
  • To align the box with the third beat of the bar put #1 = bar num., #2 = 3, #3 = 0
  • The numbers entered in the image above show that the Section Text will be place at Beat 1 in Bar 17

Lastly, it might be easier to see the text on a lead sheet if you set it to be "boxed" (#4).

Regards,
Noel

Okay -- I figured it out (I think). I actually got it working, then couldn't figure out what I did, so had to start from scratch.

On my machine:

Go to "Notation Mode" by left-clicking on the note symbol
Right-click on the stave and change from "notation mode" to "editable mode". You will see little dotted lines running through the stave.
**NOW ** Right-click on the stave where you'd like the section letter to be--the letter will be placed where you right-click.
Select "Section Letters" from the pop-up menu.
Select the letter you'd like.
If you want to remove the letter, repeat the above process; this time right-clicking on the letter and selecting "remove" from the list of available letters.

Thanks Noel and Mac -- I'd post this with a screenshot like Noel did, but I guess you have to be a veteran to have image insert capabilities.
