Just wondering if there is a way with a QWERTY keyboard to increase or decrease the tempo?

You can hit ctrl-alt-T to bring up the Tempo window where the current temp is already highlighted so that you can type in a new number, hit Return and reset it on the fly.

For the purposes of practicing, try using the PRACTICE window, found among the toolbars in the first row on the right. In there is a Tempo % set of buttons along with Play and Stop buttons, can use one button there to slow it down or put it back to whatever the tempo is in the main tempo indicator.

I sometimes set the main tempo indicator to a higher than normal bpm when using the practice window, such that once I've drilled something down I can then start at one of the slower buttons and when hitting the 1 button am getting it a bit faster than normal.

Hi WAS,

In addition to Mac's idea ...

If you can type quickly, it's also possible to set the tempo by typing in what you want. The procedure is to type t### and hit the Enter key all in quick succession. Note that "###" represents a two or three digit number.

Example: Typing t96, Enter will set the tempo to 96.

Regards,
Noel

With a program this mature and robust there may be a thousand little things like that that, to the average user, would go unnoticed. I'm a big believer in reading manuals and viewing instructional videos (wish BB was on Lynda.com), but with 600 pages it's not something you do in a day. I have a printout of the shortcut keys but that one went unnoticed.

I am using BB primarily for practice and sight reading. What are the parts of the manual or which of the videos do you think are of most importance?

Brother Woody, I have no idea how to answer that last question.

Too many unstated qualifications in a cockpit that has too many buttons sort of thing.

But I can tell you that one does not have to spend their time mastering Band in a Box in order to use it day in and day out.

Just find out what you need to do as you need to do it.

Spend your precious time and concentration on the instrument and the music, the practicing and the performance, use BB to get there as needs arise.

Thank you Mac

By the way; Sometime back you mentioned that you had not been able to easily find MIDI versions of Hymns. 300 or so hymns in MIDI format may be found at the following URL.

Many of these tips are on-screen, in the yellow fly-by hints. For example, if you hover over the tempo control, you can see the various hotkeys listed in this thread, including

[ and ] for +/-5 bpm
Ctrl-Alt-T to set a tempo
t150 <enter> to enter a tempo of (for example), 150

@Peter

Thank you. Pressing the left square bracket key or the right square bracket key is exactly what I was looking for.

I did notice the on screen yellow tips, but the syntax for the Square Brackets suggestion was so obscure to me I didn't get it.

Thank you again.

I think that is right. This is such a marvelous tool for learning. If I'd let myself, I could get off into a thousand different little paths and the thing I need to do now more than anything else is read read read, anything new and anything at my capability. It's beginning to be delicious to me.

Hi Woody,

What I do is to make a point of watching the "What's new to a version" of BIAB. That helps give me an overview of the product on a half-yearly basis. Then when I'm using BIAB and I find myself thinking, "I wonder how I can get BIAB to do this?", sometimes I recall things from those videos. It helps.

My approach generally is a variation on the adage, "necessity is the mother of invention". I use the program daily, doing what I do with it. Every now and then, though, something out of the ordinary happens and I find that I need BIAB to do something a bit different. That's when I dive into the manual. I also find using 'Search' in the PDF manual great.

All the best with your adventure!
Noel

The beta testers get a chance to exercise new features, but even so, I make it a practice after every new release to look inside EVERY DIALOG BOX in the menus. Not that I remember it all...
