Don,

For your budget, do you actually mean "studio monitors", or are you talking about decent speakers?

Seriously Don the Tannmoy Reveals are very budget and do a very good job, they are pro studio kind of gear and are VERY cheap you might even get a pair of passive ones on ebay for your price. Active motinors more cash.
I recommend them and have used them for years

Bob, I was trying to distinguish from cheap computer speakers to something more full-range. My computer has 7.1 Surround Sound and I'd a bit more bass without necessarily going to a sub-woofer. I don't think a booming bass would fly here, especially when I must crank it to hear these days. I was thinking along the lines of Radio Shack's Minimus 7s but they aren't as well-rated anymore.

I have owned the MS16's for a few years and have been happy with them. I would place them above "Good Computer Speakers", but below studio monitors. They get pretty loud & stays reasonably flat.

A friend has the MS40's and likes them, but says they are slightly bass heavy...and he is a bass player.

$100 for decent speakers and a subwoofer is a challenge, but perhaps this: http://shopper.cnet.com/separate-speakers/tascam-vl-s21-compact/4014-7869_9-33714122.html

Don, any "subwoofer" you get in that price range probably won't reproduce much below 100 Hz, so you don't have to worry about it carrying much. On the other hand, with a sub you would be giving up power on the main speakers, so maybe a straight 2.0 system would be best.

Don't let the size nor low price fool you, Don.

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=10833911

Thirty bucks.

Total FTC power: 7 watts RMS
Subwoofer: 4 RMS (into 4 ohms, @ 1 kHz, @ 10% THD)
Satellites: 1.5 RMS x 2 (into 4 ohms, @ 1 kHz, @ 10% THD)
Total peak power: 14 watts
Drivers:
Satellites: 2-inch high-excursion metallic drivers
Subwoofer : 4-inch Max-X™ high-excursion subwoofer
Speaker dimensions (H x W x D):
Satellites: 5.8” (14.6 cm) x 3.4” (8.5 cm) x 3.2” (8.2 cm)
Subwoofer: 8.4” (19 cm) x 5.5” (14 cm) x 7” (17.8 cm)

7 - 14 Watts, distribute with separate amplifiers like that, well, its likely enough to break the lease where yer living.

They do sound good, though.

I am seriously considering the Barry MS16s. The MS40s are beyond my current budget, although I really like them. I like the Tascams too but no reviews posted. Perhaps by the time I actually pull out the plastic I'll be able to swing the MS40s. I been good!

I've just blown my reserve on a Brother Duplex Laser Printer yesterday so the monitor speakers must wait until next month. Thanks for all the great replies. See why I love this place?

Mac, I guess that we were typing at the same time in unison , congruently, together, collectively, simultaneously so I missed your reply. You know my reservations about Barry products but I'm being forced to abandon my brand loyalties in favor of your basic lack of Loonies. Don't tell Greg.

Behringer has changed a lot, Don, from past misdeeds.

Today, they have one of the better servicecenter contracts going.

And the US market is now full of our own reps, QC managers, techreps, etc.

I've long ago exercised my Christian command to forgive 'em.

Now, that is not synonymous with "forget" either.

Trust but verify,

I had a fantastic experience with Behringer not to long ago that was flat out unbelievable...it involved 2 countries, 5 people, and 2 music stores in 2 countries....

The only other company that I have seen that level of service is our very own PG Music.

Friends, I've decided upon the Barry MS40s. At 40W, I should be able to peal paint off the walls. My room is only 16' X 16'. I will probably never max them anyway while I might have with the MS16s. I like a little headroom anyway. Thanks to all for the sage (or thyme) advice. You folks are top shelf. See why I love this place!?

Then don't ever turn faders all the way up to troubleshoot, like you did the other day...

Especially important to protect those tweeters.

I've never understood why people do that, have asked many who approach the service desk with the blown whatever for repair if they also floor the accelerator of their car in order to troubleshoot a problem with the car, blank stares.

Points well taken, O'Mac!

Looks like Amazon has only 1 pair left in stock. Since they tend to substitute "up" I'll take a chance. One of the competitors say "Discontinued". Watupwidat? Amazon calls it "Most Popular". Went to Barry's site but still haven't found the response curve. Says bottom end is 50Hz but I'd like to see the curve. I suppose, since they have an EQ, its superfluous (meaningless, trivial, unimportant, no biggie). At any rate, it will be far better than my Gateway computer speakers. lol

I was surprised to see Mac recommend the Logitech 3-piece system. I have several of this type and I love them. I have one on my TV, others on each PC. I uses them for gigs in the smaller rooms. They give the best reproduction of the stereo voices on my keyboards of any keyboard amp I have tried, hands down. I like what they do with vocals, a lot.

Most are Logitechs of various sizes, but I have one from Boston Acoustics which is very nice. Logitech's customer service is outstanding.

NOTICE the speaker cones in the picture that Mac gave the link to. They look like concave silver disks with nothing at the central axis. I dont know what you call cones of this type, but I like them. I have a couple of pocket size battery systems like this type that I got at a Target for $10. They are great for plugging into an ipod or laptop. The sound quality is really very good for one or two people listening close up.

Yes I know that about you, Mac.

The reason I was surprised is that these speakers - and all the 3-piece satellite systems that I know of - include processors to make the output sound 'good.' This is not necessarily a bad thing. It is just that, by definition, a studio monitor's job is to add nothing and take away nothing. I find that using logitechs to monitor gives a result that reflects what I am going to get on a variety of playback systems: headphones, car stereo, home stereo, PA system, etc. Practically speaking, they get the job done.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
