Hi,

I have been setting up a list of arrangements to produce a program where I play Sax with trio backing.
On these arrangements I have incorporated various solos, sometimes piano, sometimes guitar, flute, vibes etc.
Most of them have been done on my PC because I find it quicker. Now I have saved 20 titles to disk and transferred them to my laptop, only to find that all the solos have been converted to Guitar solos. Is this normal and is there any way to either prevent that from happening, or to correct it after transfer? The originals on my PC are fine.

I ought to point out (in case it is relevant) that the arrangements have been done by creating Medleys of several choruses, e.g Just Friends1, Just Friens2, Just friends3,... etc. I have done it this way so that I can put the solos in say, Chorus 3 and chorus 5 of a 6 chorus arrangement. It appears that the solo selector can only put the solos in 1st, Last, or Middle of an arrangement. That means in a 6 chorus arrangement the Middle would be choruses 2,3,4 and 5. If it were not for that I would be able to correct the problem quite easily. Hope that helps.

Can you describe exactly what you started with, and the steps you took to do this? i.e. did you use the Soloist on a Band-in-a-Box .MGU file, then save it as a MIDI file or render it to wave, are the solos something you recorded... etc.

Hi Andrew,

The arrangements are all BIAB standard chord generated backing trios Piano, Bass, Drums with occasional choruses of Soloists taken from the Soloist drop down menu, e.g Monty Alexander Piano, Henderson Tenor Sax. I saved them in my Program List folder. Then I copied them onto disc and transferred them to my Laptop. When I opened them in the Laptop all the solos were Guitar solos.

What type of file did you save them as, and what program did you use to open them? Did you save them as Band-in-a-Box songs, then open them up with Band-in-a-Box (on a different computer), did you save them as MIDI files and open them with a sequencer, or did you render the songs to wave?

Is it a completely different solo that you're hearing, or the same solo but played with the wrong patch (instrument)?

Hi,

They are saved as BIAB files .MGU. They were opened on my Laptop in the same way and with the same program as on my PC. Band-in-a-Box 2009 Pro.

I've been working on my PC again saving some of these as .WAV to put onto CD and find that similar things are happening on there too. I have overcome that by creating a new file with a solo in the instrument I require, then closing it and opening the one I want to record. It is then in the correct instrument. It seems that it is only recognising the last instrument called up and using that in all solos, all titles. This wasn't happening all this week. Only since I have started copying files or recording them on .WAV. Very strange.

It sounds like a strange problem...

If you re-open one of the songs on the same computer, does the Solo track show up correctly there?
Did you create the solos by using the [Custom] button in the Select Soloist dialog?
Is the Solo itself the correct solo and the patch incorrect, or is it the wrong solo as well?
If you look in the Soloist track event list, do you see patch changes where they should be (when a new solo starts)?
Which build of BB do you have installed there?

Hi Andrew,

1. Sometimes the solo instrument is correct but more often it is different from the one selected originally.
On the files transferred to Laptop they are all the same instrument.

2. Solos were created using the Normal Button

3. I believe the solos are correct, just the instrument patch which is wrong. It's difficult to be 100% certain on this.

4. Where do I find the Track List?

5. I have BB2009 Pro

Hello Chris,

If you generated a solo using Normal mode, I don't know how you would have got multiple soloists in the song in the first place. If you want for example soloist #10 for bars 1-20, and soloist #20 for bars 15-30, then you would click on the [custom] button in the Select Soloist window, specify your first range of bars (1-20), and press Generate Solo Now. Then you would return to the Select Soloist dialog, press the Custom button again, specify the second range of bars (15-30) and press Generate Solo Now. If you just generated two solos in a row with the Normal mode radio button selected, then you would only end up with the last solo you generated.

The exact build number of the program you can find by going to the Help menu and clicking on About Band-in-a-Box. You should update both to the latest build available. If an .MGU still plays differently between the two computers, then check to see if there is anything different about your MIDI setup (Opt. menu | MIDI/Audio Driver Setup). If the setup appears the same, try returning the program to factory settings (under the Opt. menu). The latest updates for Band-in-a-Box can be downloaded from:

You can open up the Event List for the Soloist track, by opening the Notation window and clicking the [S] button so you are viewing the soloist track, and then clicking on the [#] button in the notation window's toolbar. If you scan through the event list, you will see mostly notes, but you should also see some patch changes (whenever there is a new soloist that starts). If you see a trumpet patch change, but you are actually hearing acoustic piano, that would be strange.

Perhaps you could send one of the problem .MGU files to support@pgmusic.com if you are still having trouble with it?

Hello Andrew,

Thanks for your response. I'll look into the points you have made.
But just to clarify, I did not program multiple solos in a single song. Just one soloist with a chorus of solo and a chorus of 4's.
I programmed several songs in this way and used different soloists in each, but many of the soloists changed when I transferred them to laptop. Some have remained the same.
I'd stick with the laptop for these projects but it has an infuriating habit of anticipating what I am going to open when the curser passes over something. Different things are popping up all the time and although I have searched I can't find any way of eliminating it. It drives me nuts.

Hi Chris,

An inexpensive aftermarket USB Mouse for your laptop would be a valuable addition to the laptop bag.

Hi Mac,

I used a spare USB mouse I have and it has cured the problem. Thanks for the tip.
I haven't used it before because it requires extra space to use, but I find when it is plugged in I can still use the built in mouse. Great.
I can now do all my BIAB programming on the laptop and avoid transfers.

And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
