Prices around here for HDTVs are crazy low. In my studio I find myself squinting at the screen all the time, ending with a headache. I noticed that a lot of the HDTVs have a PC input, so I'm considering buying a 32" tv for a monitor.
32" is not that big for a TV by current standards, so that size is fairly cheap. I think for an app like BIAB that isn't text-intensive, it would alleviate a lot of the eye strain.
Is anybody else doing this? If so, how's it working out? Any unexpected problems? Does clarity become an issue when you blow the picture up that much?

I would be interested in this if you do get one as I am thinking of doing this too. The only thing about it that worries me at present is the resolution - the typical is 1920×1080p whic if your viewing close is not so good - maybe - not sure. Got a 42" LG 1080 HD TV for Xmas in 2011 and liked it so much I added a 47" in 2012.
About $500 on sale.
Trust me, once you get a large 1080 (not 720) TV you will find it hard to live with a standard size screen.
No more reading glasses!
As mentioned in an earlier post, if you go with 2 large screen TV's get the same size or your extended desktop will be slightly large on the bigger on, even at the same resolution.
Only slightly annoying.
I'm using Win XP on a Dell desktop.

bought one and just finished setting it up... I like it!
the 32" barely fits in the space I have available, or I'd have bought something bigger.
The 32" is still a big improvement over what I had. I'm a happy camper.

I looked into that and my concern is - aren't tvs made to sit a certain distance from - like usually 6 feet at least? Are there any issues from sitting too close to a tv - where a pc monitor is made to be on or near a desk instead of across the room..... Just wondering.

Guys, go for it! It's a no-brainer. My 32-inch HDTV was about $300 last year, no regrets. And I sit 2 to 3 feet from it.
(Wait, maybe those headaches are NOT from tequila.)

Occasionally you will find a computer monitor with a resolution fo 1920x1200, the majority of the larger ones has the same as the HDTVs 1920x1080. I'm not talking about the larger screen with resolutions like 2560x1440 or 1600 that are sold in Germany having four digit price tags before the decimal point. So a TV monitor might be an option pricewise.
But one thing needs to be explored: COO (cost of ownership) How is the energy consumption of the selsected model compared to a computer screen?

I've been using HDTV monitors for some years now, with absolutely no problems. At the moment I'm on an LG 47in LED and it's great. I'd never want to go back to a PC monitor.

I have a few of these and I think LED 1080 is the way to go. LCD is nice, but LED seems clearer to me. I noticed things (like a single pixel being off in RB VU meters) on the LED I never noticed on the LCDs.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

the energy efficiency tag said the annual energy cost is $11 ... I thought that was pretty reasonable, but I don't have a basis of comparison

my hierarchy of headache preference would be:
best: sitting too close to the screen
next best: tequila headache*
worst: headache from squinting
* disclaimer:
actually, I've never tasted tequila, I just assume I'd like that kind of headache better than squinting and less than sitting too close to a screen. I reserve the right to change that opinion in case I ever discover that tequila is actually my all-time favorite kind of headache.

Just a comment on smaller monitors: I have two full-resolution 24" HDMI monitors for which I paid $200 each about a year ago which provide a great image. Unfortunately, I have had to reduce the resolution in order to read text in certain apps, particularly Propellerhead Reason, so it kind of defeated the purpose. I'm not sure what I'd do if I was able to do it again, go with two slightly larger monitors or one really large one.

Well, Guido, can't do anything about the spouse situation, but in my way of thinking, if the amount of power consumed will pay for itself in the better way of getting work out the door and yield an easier or faster time between contract and invoice, this old crusty capitalist must invest in the equipment.
But, it usually takes a lot of long and hard thought to get this crusty old capitalist to part with his hard-earned money anyway. And then I try to shop very carefully, often choosing used or demonstrator deals over brand spankin' new stuff.
My youngest daughter once told me that I was cheap.
I thanked her for the compliment and then informed her that the more proper term might be "frugal".
Today, she is all grown up and married, the mother of my two grandsons and I've noticed something about her. She's now just as "cheap" as Dad ever was, right?
And the price of power over on this side of the pond is rising on a near monthly basis as we speak...

As far as power consumption goes, I read that the LED's use about 30% less than a comparable sized LCD TV,
That's why the LCD's are going so cheaply.
The smart money is on the LED's.
They are phasing out incandescent light bulbs also. I believe you can only buy what mfgs and retailers already have in stock.
Soon we will all be forced to buy fluorescent or LED bulbs.
More expensive in the short term.
Bottom line is to check the energy consumption labels.
