Hi,

I'm fairly new to BIAB - primarily used Jammer.

In Jammer, you could freeze bars (not just tracks), so that if you got some set the way you want it in a section of a song, you didn't lose it when the song regenerated for another section. And you could also just regenerate specific bars.

I have searched, but can't seem to find a feature like this. Does it exist in BIAB?

Thanks!
Dave

Hi Dave,

Welcome to BIAB and the forums.

It exists in later versions of BIAB (I think it was first introduced in 2012 or 2011.5). Simply right-click on the tracks you want to freeze (e.g. Bass, Drums, Piano, Guitar, etc.), and then choose to Freeze it. The command is near the bottom of the pop-up menu.

Regards,
Noel

Nope.

Here is where Real Band comes in. What BiaB does by default is regenerate the tracks every time. In Realband its the opposite. The tracks are frozen unless you say otherwise. In Realband you can highlight the part you want to change, and just that part will regenerate.

After you have done that a few times, try the 'multi-riff' feature.

Thanks, Noel. I have 2013. I understand how to freeze tracks - but my understanding is that it freezes tracks for the entire song. Is there a way to freeze tracks just for a range of bars, while leaving the same tracks unfrozen on other bars?

Jammer does this with a function called "keep" - it knows which bars are already done - and you don't want to regenerate.

Does BIAB have this functionality?

Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave,

BIAB doesn't allow for partial freezes. It's either the whole track frozen or the whole track unfrozen. There's a thread in the Wishlist forum at the moment that is asking for partial freezing. You should add your voice to that thread.

All the best,
Noel

Hi Dave,

You can add your request to the Band in a Box Wishlist Forum, where quite a few requests get honored in future releases of the program.

In the meantime, don't overlook the tip given above about using RealBand program, which ships with Bnand in a Box. In Realband it is possible to highlight bars and have the program only regenerate the highlighted bars. This is opposite the idea of freezing the bars you want to keep, instead highlighting and regenerating the bars that you don't want to keep, but the end result is much the same. And, if you don't like what the regeneration sounds like, you can try regenerating that are again and see if the autoaccompaniment patterns and algorithms don't come up with something you can use.

Also, don't overlook simple Muting by the Bar inside Band in a Box, sometimes using the Bar Settings to simply Mute highlighted number of bars can do the trick as well, the equivalent of telling a live player to "sit out" during a certain part or section. Muting over a few bars or even a whole section is often performed in studios during the Mixdown phase in order to solve various problems. Every member of the group does not have to play at all times to get a point across. There are many instances when less can be more.
