I am trying to enter a song melody that is in 3/4 time and includes some triplets in a bar. Along with this in the same bar I have a dotted quarter note chord and then a 1/8 note which concludes the bar. I am unable to find a way to show the dotted quarter note without the program tieing the same chord over for a 1/8 measure and then I can enter the last 1/8 note. Is there a way of just showing the chord as a dotted chord?

Hi David and welcome to the forum,
Check the Rest function to true when in Notation Edit mode, then click on the vertical dotted line at the place just after where you want the note to end.
Note Entry and editing inside this program is completely different from any other, it is automatic about things and much faster once you understand the thing and get the hang of it.
There is more in the way of tutorial on the BiaB FAQs page.

I am sorry but I am not sure that I have stated correctly what I am trying to do as what you suggested just adds in a rest which I don't want. I will try and state what I am trying to do again. I am adding a song in 3/4 time I require a triplet in the first of the 3 vertical dotted lines. I want a dotted 1/4 note in the second series of 3 vertical lines and I want a 1/8 note in the last series of verticl lines. I have placed the last note in the 3rd vertical line. As soon as I do that I get a note in the first line in this series and it ties together with the 1/4 note in the second series of 3 lines. I know that musically this extends the 1/4 note but I would rather see the 1/4 note dotted as it is much neater and that is the way the peice is written. I have tried ticking the rest on and entering it in the last of the second and the third series of vertical lines and what I get is a rest put into the music. I may not be understanding how you are trying to explain what to do to achieve the end result. Can you offer anymore suggestions?

Not trying to be snarky or anything like that, but if you were able to say what you want in proper musical terms you would get the help you need. In your second series of 3 lines a dotted quarter note would be the length of all 3 lines. If all you want in the 3rd full beat is a note on the 3rd line you have to click a rest on the first line of the 3rd series and enter your note on the 3rd vertical line. Later, Ray

I am not sure what you mean by not speaking in music terms. I have had no issue using triplets and dotted notes in 4/4 time but have been unable to get the same dotted note in 3/4 time. Is it possible that there is no way of doing this?

Don't you think that the OP was stating his issue as best he could? I wasn't aware that a Master's Degree in music theory was a prerequisite for asking for advice here.
You said you weren't trying to be snarky...and then went ahead and did an excellent job of being just that.
And you have the distinction of having posted the first snarky reply I've ever seen on this OUTSTANDING forum...that is almost legendary for its LACK of snarky posts.
I'm just sayin'.

Hi David, Welcome to the forum Mac mentioned a PG Music tutorial on notation entry. Below is a URL to a video that PG Music have put together to explain this. You need to scroll down the page a bit until you get to the "Video Archives". Ignore the fact that the notation video has 2004 in its name. The process is identical for 2013. Well worth watching. http://www.pgmusic.com/videos.bbwin.htmI personally found entering notation in BIAB quite confusing at the beginning. That was because the approach is completely different from any other notation program. Once I got the hang of it, though, I was amazed at how quick it is to work with. Essentially, don't worry about those tied notes, simply click on the staff where you'd like a note to be and BIAB will put one there. The tie is simply pre-empting what might happen (a bit like predictive text on mobiles). All the best, Noel

The last note entered will always be too long in duration. That is by design.
The way to get that last note to end in the last beat of the bar is by inserting the Rest IN THE FIRST BEAT OF THE FOLLOWING BAR. The note will automatically become the proper duration in the preceeding bar.
If there are to be notes in the following bar instead of Rest, just click the next note where it is supposed to be in the first beat of the following bar, and watch the last note in the previous bar automatically become the right duration all by itself.
This method of note entry is completely different from any other music program I know. Once it is understood, though, it is also the FASTEST keyboard/mouse note entry method I've ever encountered. Matter of fact, I've said it before here, I wish some of my Music Notation programs used this method, it is sheer genius in its design. I've also said that this alone is patentable, maybe it is already, and I think it could be sold to other developers of music softwares.
Play with it, get to know how it works and try not to bring any preconceived notions as to how you think it *should* work.

If I understand correctly, you are trying to get a dotted quarter to display as a dotted quarter, and not as a quarter an eighth tied together?
It seems to be dependant on which beat you are entering the dotted quarter note on. If it is entered on the 1st or 3rd beat, it will display as a dotted note. But if it is entered on the 2nd or 4th beat, you get two notes tied together.
I don't know of a way to control this, perhaps someone does.
