I've just been wandering around Youtube and found these clips of a New Zealand Maori song written in the early 20th Century. The song is "Pokarekare Ana". I believe it's one of the most beautiful melodies ever written. I thought some might like the opportunity to hear it I really enjoy listening to music in languages I have no understanding of because it allows me to focus entirely on the sound of the music without having to split my focus between lyrics and music. Hayley Westenra has been described as a classical crossover artist. Her link is below. ... link to Hayley Westenra's versionI was totally blown away by the South Korean version below (10 tenors and 1 soprano). The sound is absolutely magnificent. It's music at its most glorious and the soprano has one of the most beautiful tones I've heard. ... link to South Korean operatic versionRegards, Noel

Somehow those Polynesians have a real talent to find great melodies in the wind, the sound of the breaking waves on the shore, and the songs of birds.
Nice find.

Beautiful song. Played it many, many times. It was a staple in many Waikiki shows. Back in the day, my roommate was a singer from New Zealand who did a single at a club just down the way from the club I was working in the International Marketplace. Thanks for the listen.

It is in the mode of the Western Major Scale. The Ionic mode.
As are just about all of the western operatic arias.
The Major Scale, though some consider it to be simplistic, is indeed very beautiful.
And, like the Pentatonic Scale, there's still a whole lot of beautiful melodies yet to be devised from the Major Scale, as well.
Strong Performance. That's what makes something simple soar. Perfect Intonation is part of it, attention to detail in Phrasing within the particular style is another, the commonly accepted Dynamic interpretation, getting slightly louder when ascending, slightly softer when descending, keeping that tempo.
Wonderful thing.

More proof that music is indeed the Universal Language and transcends the limitations of the spoken tongue. Simply beautiful, Noel! Thanks for posting.

Hi Noel, I must agree......beautiful! I heard it sung by a Maori Choir, who were appearing in the same theatre, on my first visit to New Zealand many years ago....fell in love with it! I learned the words phonetically from a couple of the Maoris. Then I bought a recording of a childrens' choir singing it. And when Sally & I toured NZ a couple of years later, we actually slotted our harmony version into the act! (It started out that we just sang the first few bars.......then a lot of the audience joined in......so we eventually ended up (most nights) singing the whole song!) I have an old EP record of it playing, as I type this.....thanks again for the memory! Joe G.

Whenever I get something stuck in the back of my throat, I dislodge it by drinking a beer. It's called the Heineken Maneuver.

Try some of the old Classical MIDI styles on this melody, should work well.
