For the last week google chrome has been throwing up "pages have become unresponsive" with the option to wait or kill the page. It just happened again! Makes posting and searching a pain, pain, pain!
I've researched, cleared browser data, emptied cache, disabled toolbars, etc.
Apparently it has something to do with javascript.
I googled Javascript and there is a javascript error fix it and speed up PC to download. It's called SpeedMaxpc
Has anyone used this and did it do any damage to your computer? The reason I ask is, last year I ran a registry clean and repair and ended up having to do a total re-install. I definitely don't want to go there again, ever.
It only seems to happen with google chrome, so maybe I don't need the javascript repair.
Any thoughts greatly appreciated

Every time I read about a browser problem in the forums or on the internet, … one or both of two names always come up.
Google Chrome and/or Firefox.
I’ve always stuck with IE and I seldom have any browser problems. If I do, they’re easily solved with a restart.
I’m not sure why so many people choose other browsers than IE, (other than the MS haters), but I think I’ll just keep on pluggin’ with IE.

HI Bob,
The reason we used Chrome in the beginning and not IE was due to an issue with logging in to our IP. The issue has been resolved so if this keeps up I might have to try IE again
Chrome has been really good until now. It starting playing up after I read about the Java security and disabled Java. I have updated Java and re-enabled it. I didn't disable JavaScript though.
I also had a windows update at the same time, so it might be something to do with that as well.
It has taken for ever to type this out. Aargh!

Same here Bob. No problems at all with IE!

Working in Web Development, I think IE is behind in many features. Also, personally I'm having more problems with IE stability than Firefox or Chrome.
(I think I've narrowed down the issue, but that just verifies the issue)
That said, I also know of features that work in IE only, but those are pretty rare.

I'm not trying to keep this thread going but something interesting has happened. I loaded up IE to do some browsing and when I wanted to come here to PG, my free McFee site advisor kept throwing up a dangerous site warning. I tried other sites I know and trust and same thing. Hmmm...got me thinking. Maybe it got corrupted some how. Anyway I un-installed the program and hey presto! Chrome is working like it used to. I've typed this whole post without one "unresponsive pages" freeze up. I hope it's fixed. Keeping everything crossed!

You uninstalled WHICH program? If you're talknig about McAfee, ... it was corrupted before you ever installed it.
McAfee and Norton are two programs I'd never recommend to anyone.
But that's just me.

I have Norton and haven't had any trouble as yet. The McAfee (my typo) came as a free something or other a few years back. It a worry to know it was corrupted.
Oh bother! I just got another freeze up. I'll keep researching.

I had problems with IE9 and Google being unresponsive. I bought "FixCleaner" and it fixed all my problems. Later, Ray

Download a free program called, CCleaner from the piriform website.
Your problem likely has nothing at all to do with either browser, but with all the junk left behind from visiting websites.
ccleaner can take care of all that automatically.
Keep it and run it about once a week for speedy web browsing.

Hi Ray & Mac,
Thanks for the help. Are these cleaners the same as registry cleaners? I read all the time people saying don't do a registry clean. After using the last one I'm very wary.
It was supposed to clean out old files and optimise your computer but I lost some .dlls that the computer needed, programs wouldn't load and I needed to re-install the OS and all my programs again . It was ugly!
If you've had no trouble I'll give them a go.

AFAIK CCleaner doesn't touch the Registry. It was, however, The Fix for some browser problem or other I was having about a year ago. It can't hurt and may very well help.
I have also learned to be very suspicious of any one-button approaches to "fixing" Windows. Two free programs that I trust more than others are Advanced System Care and the McGlary Utilities. I run individual modules though--still won't do that one-button thing. ASC has a companion program called Smart Defrag that I prefer for doing deep optimization.

Thanks Richard,
It's reassuring to have you, Ray and Mac give CCleaner the thumbs up.
I've downloaded it but haven't used it yet. I've uninstalled a lot of obsolete rubbish and tidied up and Google is much better. My desktop icons used to be whitish and flip over to their right colors whenever I exited from a site, but now they stay as they are. Progress!
It is only Chrome that this is happening with and it's not just me apparently, Chromes' unresponsive page issue is being complained about in other forums as well. There's talk of it being a Javascript issue. Firefox and IE don't throw up these messages.
When I get a freeze up or the unresponsive page message, pressing Control + shift + J opens the Javascript console. I exit it without doing anything (wouldn't know what to do anyway) and it fixes it.
Not an ideal solution so I'll either use a different browser or it's the CCleaner. Don't you just love technology when it goes haywire!

If I can add my two cents,
I switched to Chrome and have not looked back, (for me) it is much faster that IE and the little nuances just grabs me. I keep logged in and I get the pages on any device I open!
I only use IE at work as Sharepoint Chrome does not seem to be playing together as nice as IE....

I don't know, sounds like you might have something else going on here...that's not good. I would recommend that you run CCleaner ( http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download ) as Mac suggested and then download and run MalwareBytes ( http://www.malwarebytes.org/ ). Both are highly trusted by the family here and free. Sure sounds like you have something else going on. I run both Explorer and Chrome and not had any issues other than when I've "chased a rabbit deep down an internet dark hole" and ended up with that CCleaner and MalwareBytes seems to solve.

CCleaner does indeed include a Registry cleaner, but the user must invoke it separately so it does not clean the registry unless you tell it to do so.
However, I have used the registry cleaner routine without problems and it not only gets rid of "orphans" in the windows registry that may be left over after program uninstalls, it also includes a "backup" option that saves a tiny file that can be used to restore it back to exactly the way it was before the cleaning, just in case. I have always chosen the option to save that file when the window prompts at the end of the registry cleaning, just in case, but have never to date had to revert due to a problem with it.
But the main "cleaner" icon at the top of the list, which opens highlighted by default, does not touch the registry. It is mostly involved with locating and removing Temporary Internet Files that your browser has cached, Cookies that you don't want piled up in long lists over time (IME Internet Explorer gets mired down in too many cookies over time and that is the single biggest reason for slow loading or even nonloading of webpages) and a few other things it does all contribute to keeping the thing running fast and well. The entire list of what the "cleaner" app does is also user selectable on the LH side such that you can customize the cleaning to not take out certain things if you so desire.
AND -- at first install ccleaner gives ou the option to KEEP any cookies from websites such as this forum where you can specify that the forum software "keep me logged in" such that you don't have to enter passwords every visit. Very nice feature.

Add SuperAntiSpyware to your toolbox. When I get a call for anything performance related, I run
Malwarebytes CCleaner SuperAntiSpyware
in that order. 99% of the time I find what I need after just 2 of the 3, but as long as it's on my thumb drive, why not run all 3? They pay me a 1 hour minimum anyway, so I try to give them 60 minutes of work for their $75.
Also open a run prompt and type
%temp%
and delete everything in that folder that you can. Some files will be in use and not able to be deleted.
Then internet cache and cookies if anything remains after the 3 tools.
If you still have problems, reinstall your browsers.

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!
Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.
Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
