I've had it on since it started, but I find myself muting it and playing something else on YouTube! LOL.

Been trying to avoid the BAFTAs last night here in the UK.
Blanket coverage for one and a half hours of people arriving and getting out of limos.
What?

I didn't really recognize anyone. Things change. They say that people of 'retirement' age now and up to 5 years from now are a major market. But "WE" are ignored? Where's the best song for a rocking chair crowd? Where's the song about canes and feeding tubes? Where's the best re-release of 60's music. Something's gotta give. It also seems that certain types of people all congregate in the US when there is a world wide music scene, much of it ignored. The word seems to be learn to rap and get a firearm. Getting shot is a bonus. Justin Timberlake gave glimpses of the old days, too bad he had to muck it up with stuff that could have been ignored. Pretending to play a couple of drums while to guys with drum kits in the back 2 corners whacked away is overkill, and she couldn't even hit the drum when the sound came out of the speakers. Weird, and I don't even remember her name now, and don't care, and won't look it up. So much for that. We had a 2 person birthday party here last night and the 'kids' insisted on watching it. I needed to cleanse myself and went down to the keyboard and messed with tunes from the 17 and 1800's. And even some Wagner to darken my mood.

Sorry, I was flossing somethin'.
No interest in the Grammys. I'm not familiar with many of the performers, and with a few exceptions I don't like the music they're putting out. And you guys know I'm not a get-offa-my-lawn type -- I'm a fan of Lady Gaga, Usher, Cee Lo Brown, and Taylor Swift (live, at least).
Just... I keep going back to classic rock, classical, folk: the Beatles, the Who, Meat Loaf, Billy Joel, Annie Lennox, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Sondheim, Ashman & Menken & Schwartz (oh my), movie soundtracks by Williams and Goldsmith and Tom Lehrer, Makem & Clancy, the Eagles, Christine Lavin, Uncle Bonsai....
I don't want to dislike and feel disconnected to contemporary popular music, dammit. It makes me feel old.

My wife recorded it and we will probably watch the performances. But seriously, except for a few great performances here and there, I have never liked watching ANY awards shows.
I do think it is important to at least know what is popular out there -- Songwriters need to keep their finger on the pulse -- even if they don't like the patient.

I don't think I've EVER watched the GA but, thanks to Pandora and YT, I keep discovering new, highly-talented musicians across the board in new (to me) genres. I would rather follow some talent on YT. Much more rewarding.

We do have our own awards show here, but I've never entered. Someone mentioned him, I spent an hour doing poor knockoff's of Rachmaninoff's Piano concertos, as only person who plays most anything in a fake book can. Overlay the Pipe organ, strings section, horns, and fill it with a synth, and blast my basement with the Bose. It was fun, except too long on the stool I couldn't walk to leave. My feet sleep on their own, but I didn't feel the loss of sensation to all my legs. The more I drank the cider the better I played. Even I noticed it.

I watched it, but MAYBE 4 things were of interest. The tribute to Bob Marley was interesting but could have been better performed had they not cluttered the stage with that many people. Bruno Mars did a good job with it, and Sting, and then Ziggy, but the last Marley kind of messed it up.
And the tribute to Levon Helm, because of my fondness for Levon I was in tears. But again, the girl from Alabama Shakes or whoever they are really kind of messed it up, as did the gospel girl. Had they just had the country guys do it, I would have enjoyed it moe.
And don't get me started on The Black Keys. I can't stand them. Carney is all the proof we need that man came from apes, and Auerbach is just loud. And I know them a bit and know some history and Carney is not my favorite person. He is behind Hitler, The Ayatolla, Saddam Hussein....
And I just don't "get" Adele. I can name 5 singers LOCALLY here that have better pitch control and better timbre.
I DID enjoy seeing Taylor Swift totally digging the evening, dancing in the aisle, knowing EVERY song.... And I kind of dig Bruno Mars for his old school sound that evokes James Brown.

Yep, that's me too. I really try to at least have some inkling of what's going on now but it's getting more and more difficult. One of my favorite reality shows is Bar Rescue. It's about a high powered consultant who goes in and completely remakes bars and clubs. One episode I watched the other day is a bar in Laguna Niguel, a very upscale area in Orange County, CA. Mostly college age kids 25 and under. A centerpiece of the redo involved their DJ. The consultant brought in another DJ who worked with Eminem and other big names to train the current DJ. It was fascinating to watch him do the training. It was all about crowd management to maximize drink sales. He talked about beat matching where he smoothly transitions from a 95 bpm song to say a 115 bpm song by doing various software tricks live. He also talked about how to spin the vinyl which I grudgingly admit is a true skill, talk to the crowd and stuff like that. The pro said to drive the dancers hard for maybe 20 minutes then deliberately tone it down for about 5 minutes to give the dancers a break and nudge them to the bar for refills then crank it back up again.
This is a fairly large and beautiful night club with a max capacity of about 200. Perfect for what we used to play with our bands in the past. There was no mention of live music, the DJ was the star here. In fact one of the changes that was made was to move the DJ booth from the side of the dance floor to front and center where all eyes are on him. I'm not even going to describe the music, we all know what it sounds like. What I know of bands and all their problems I can see how it's much easier for management to deal with one person who's a pro DJ who is an integral part of the club and he turns himself into a star. Who needs a band?
When the finale of the show came with their grand reopening the crowd was very well dressed high end yuppie types with lots of barely dressed hot babes, the place looked awesome, the music was thumping the drinks were flowing and all was well. Exactly the kind of place all of us would have gone to back in the day except for one thing, no bands. Oh well, times change.
Obviously what happens in SoCal is not what's going on in the whole world but we tend to be the leaders and everybody else follows eventually and DJ's are already a big deal and probably getting bigger.
Oh, the Grammy's. Right. Pass.

I hear the rendition of Levon's "The Weight" was awful. Dreadful. Glad I missed it. One of my favourite songs of all time.
The Band has a big time local connection, and my best friend has relatives that worked with them, which is a new connection of sorts, never came up until his last birthday party.

We like Kelly Clarkson. Talent is her calling card; she doesn't need to wear a g-string to be a concert draw. My wife and I were happy for her Grammy win for "Best Pop Vocal Album". We really enjoyed her tributes to the Grammy Hall of Fame recipients, Patti Page and Carole King. ("Tennessee Waltz" and "A Natural Woman") https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgZLYnyj2Oo

I quit watching TV in the mid 1980s, but I quit watching all award shows before that (Oscar, Grammy etc.) when I realized they really weren't award shows at all, but promotional shows advertising certain artists or movies and weren't really considered the best of the best.
That's my opinion, anyway.

Well, the Eddie you missed knew his ex wife very well and saw how he treated her. She was among the smartest, coolest and most talented people I ever knew (journalist) and he stomped on her like she was a pack of ants. (Is that the right collective for ants?)
No use for him at all.
Remember I am from Akron too. We crossed paths often. His parents both work at the newspaper where my ex wife worked.
