I have encountered a problem entering a very simple song into Band In A Box and have asked this question before and have never been able to get an answer that will work for me. I have a bar that starts off with a 1/4 rest then a 1/4 note, then an other quarter note that is supposed to be tied to a dotted 1/8 note and then followed by a 1/16 note. I have been told by phone support that you cannot show this as it is written and have to used the staff roll notation mode. I have done this and you can make the song sound right but you can't read the music and know how it is to be played using this function. Can some one assist me in solving this problem?

Hi Dave,
I just now tried it and got the right result.
First, I hit the Options button and unchecked Swing Notation for what you describe is an Even counting divisible by duple rather than triple.
Then, I selected Rest at top of Notation Window in Edit mode, clicked on the dotted line for first beat. That created a long rest that extends into the next measure. That is the way notation entry works in BB.
Next, I clicked on the first dotted line for the second beat to get a note there. Again, the note will at first be longer than desired, but noticed what happened to the Rest - it automatically changes to suit and now is a proper Quarter Rest because of the Quarter Note just entered.
I clicked again on the beginning of the third beat. This too yields a note that enters as too long in value, but then I clicked another note on the last dotted line of the last beat to enter the sixteenth note and there is proper notation for the bar. Notice that the last sixteenth note is tied over to a whole note in the second bar. That again is normal, you must click either a Rest or Note in the next bar, first dotted line of the first beat, to get the sixteenth by itself in the preceding measure.
I can't imagine why Support staff would tell you what you report.
The Band in a Box notation entry system is sheer genius, but you first have to play around with it to understand the way it works. And once you do, you will find it MUCH faster than any other computer notation scheme out there. At least, I do.

I would like to thank you for your answer to my problem. I have always tried to enter the dotted 1/8 note first and never got the result that I was expecting. I am not sure why you have to enter the sixteenth note in the right location first but it definetly gives you the correct result. Again thanks for your help.
