I have a question still trying to set up a lights system from midi. found a program lightjams software. I told them about biab they are telling me I should be able to do this. I've got there free ver. to try before buying. I was told to to set biab midi drivers to go to lights I loose my sound then. Is this something you can do. and if so can you seperate the midi tracks so I could set the bass for some lights maybe strings for other what do you think

Hi jt3, **Band in a Box by itself cannot address more than one MIDI output at a time.** However, BiaB aficionado and superuser Paul Warren, the guiding force behind the Band in a Box Wiki, has recently created a VST plugin that can route the MIDI output of Band in a Box to more than one MIDI device at at time. The thread about that is here: VSTi to MIDI thread Be sure to read that thread thru to the end and find the latest posting of the free VSTi. No guarantees, but I think it should work with a bit of the old college try on your part. It works with vocal harmonizers and multiple MIDI synths, no reason it couldn't work with lights, give or take the type of light controller software you have, which may be the unknown here. --Mac

There should be a way to do this but it depends a lot on a couple of factors.
First, for your midi sounds are you using a hardware synth like the Ketron SD2 or a software synth like the Coyote Wavetable?
If the former (hardware) is it daisy chained with your lights or is it a separate port?
Without answers to those questions it's going to be hard to guide you.

Thanks Mac always have something helpful to say. I'm learning but so much to learn. I usr biab on 95% of the gigs I do. This is a great learning tool. Got to play with a real steel man a week ago. The things I have been working on as a lead guitar player fell right in place. I felt right at home he wasn't Paul Franklin but he was very good. I will see what is up maybe make it work thanks again John

You can also "send output midi channels / chords" from within Biab as well. You could set your Biab music channels to 2-6 etc and use the other channels to send to the light control, possibly? But, you can definitely "send midi channel output chords" FROM Biab.
Good luck,
Trax

Since you are using a soft synth you can send chords to your lights by following the instructions on this Biab Wiki page in the section Software Synth + Hardware Ports, sub section Chords to Hardware Device. This page is still a work in progress but it's fairly complete for your requirements.
You could also send melody to your lights in a similar fashion but if you wish to hear the melody as well you'd need to duplicate the melody to a blank track.

It's only supposed to be able to go in the top slot as it's a VSTi not a VST. You will not be able to hear the track you insert it on unless you have a hardware synth on the port you select. Your best bet is to read the referenced wiki page and try sending the chords to your lights first. That's the easiest way to go. Should you want melody sent to your lights check back on the page in a few days as I'm going to add instructions for that later.

To the best of my knowledge that only works when you are using a hardware synth. When using a DXi or VSTi synth the chords do not seem to go to the selected hardware port. At least it's never worked on any of my systems and on any version of BiaB I've ever had.

jt3 please keep us posted. Others may be interested in incorporating lights too, and once a solution is learned, posting it to the tips and tricks forum is a good way to make what you've learned permanantly available to others.
