I've heard the term gassing in reference to some product that someone was salivating over for awhile. Don't know the origin of the term gassing, but I'm assuming that it means desiring something to the nth degree. Normally I experience my most gasseous moments when I first get out of bed, but that really has nothing to do with music, although I'm working on a version of Star Spangled Banner. My biggest apprehension is hitting that high note on "the land of the Freeeeeeeeeeeeeeee". When I used to play trumpet, I would have to really tighten my lips to hit it and.............. enough of that. Just wanted to tell somebody about my new toy due in on Mon or tues. I broke down and ordered a cheapie lap steel after reading a couple of posts regarding making one etc. No tools or equipment to even attempt a crude instrument, so I went the cheapie route instead, just to see if I can figure the thing out first. http://folk-instruments.musiciansfriend....-Bag?sku=513453Going with the black one, and if I can figure out which tuning I want to use, I might have some fun with it. Any steelers here, your input is not only welcome, but coveted. I'm thinking about doing a dobro open tuning, so that any licks I learn can also be used when I get a resonator guitar. But the old C6 seems to be a favorite for western swing etc. I'd appreciate any thoughts or experiences you might care to share. Check out the price on this thing, and the reviews aren't bad for a cheapie. If this works out, I'll be able to convice the wife that I need a Zum Stage One pedal steel to further improve my steel playing. Well I guess this post was not very entertaining or educational, or problem solving in and of itself, but I had fun telling you about it.

Enjoyed your post, as always. This time, I laughed so hard, had to wipe the tears from my eyes. Add a little reverb and chorus, and post Star Spangled Banner, when you are ready. . . Wonder how you are going to put your mic placement though. Probably 3 feet back and left of center.
I'm sure there will be an AIR of excitement when this post appears.

The steel came in on friday, so I figured with a little luck, I'd unpack it, set it up, plug it in, tune it, slip on the thumb and finger picks, and be steelin with the best of them in no time..........
Ahem.....well it looks like its back to music theory 101 for me.........seems that thirds and fifths and seconds and 9ths and even 13th come into play a lot more that I had noticed with bass. And I guess my guitar playing sucks, cuz I don't even know what a 13th is when I'm playing live.
ah well.........another challenge and learning experience. I know there are a couple of steelers on the forum, any thoughts or suggestions would be more than welcome.

Hi
How you tune up will depend mostly what type of music you intend to practice. I started lap steel back when it was called Hawaiian guitar. I was twelve. Hitting eighty this October, so have been at it for a while. "G" tuning of course for Blue Grass, but will also work on other stuff,especiolly if you make the fourth string an "E", giving you a G6 chord or Em chord. Hawaii when I was there favoured a C6 tuning......Good luck...Hank

Thanks for the info Hank.........the steel came with very very light gauge strings. So light that when tuned to an open E, the 6 string is like a rubber band. I ordered a couple of sets of replacements, one for G and one for E. They are supposed to be a heavier gauge. I guess once I get some decent strings on this baby, I'll have to determine if my tone bar is up to the job weight and style. It is an heirloom from my late uncle who was a steeler back in the days of Ernest Tubb, Martha Carson, Maddox Brothers and Rose, etc. Thanks for the reply.

The "C6" I mentioned earlier starts with "E" on the first string. Just shows how we make it our own. Lots change tunings from tune to tune....Hank

Hi toucher
Well done on getting a Lap Steel.
I got an 8 string Lap Steel 2 weeks ago but due to illness I haven't done much with it yet.
Tuning it to C6 as most seem to do,the next thing I want to know is what chords are on what fret.
That was how I started my Pedal Steel playing and for me,it worked.
I have purchased 2 DVD sets by Cindy Cashdollar which are excellent,in the first one She shows
how to play Cold Cold Heart,problem is that the backing track is not included so,until
I get to write the backing for it,I won't get very far.
I find the most difficult thing to learn is how to pick the different string combinations
but with practise it will come.
Keep us informed on your progress,and any tips you find will be appreciated.

Congrats Alan.........
I have a 6 string, the simpler the better for me hehe. I may try dobro tuning first, to aclimatize myself with the mechanics of the bar, finger picks, thumb pick etc. So far I"ve been able to make it sound like a chicken being eaten alive by a cougar. after I get comfortable with the dobro licks, as well as the mechanics involved, I'm talking probably a year or so I will try to progress to a stage one or carter starter. Thats more pedal and levers than I will ever be able to figure out at my age.
I have a good friend who is going to show me some things to get started, in a few days, then I'll probably order some dvd stuff for lessons.
You said Cindy's dvd didn't have a soundtrack, seems odd. Easy enough to build on in BIB. I will probably join the steel guitar forum, to interact with some of the guys there and pick up some tips as well. You might consider that if you do not already belong.

You seem to be more organised than me regarding your plan of action for learning.
Been a member of the Steel Guitar Forum for years,absolutely superb bunch of guy's
some real gentlemen on there.
After my initial chicken screaming noises I actually thought Pedal Steel was easier,but after
my bad experience with the one I had,I would think twice now before getting another.
Wife say's I am too old to be starting new stuff,huh what does She know?????lol
Carter Starter is a really nice Steel,but everyone will tell you get a Pro model,yeah like
$2500 upwards for something decent,unless I was really confident,or a bit younger,a starter
will do just fine until you get the hang of it.
I considered a Stage One but the import and shipping costs to the UK were very high
so that was a no no.
Regarding tuning the Lap Steel,a search on the internet shows many different tunings,but I tuned
mine to C6 because all the instruction DVD's in the UK show excercises in C6.
