Hi Rarebear,
YES, you should connect both.
The USB connection has only the MIDI DATA on it and that must be there for any BB songfile that contains any MIDI information.
The Audio connection must also be there for the Realtracks, Realdrums or any possible Audio that will play in a BB song.
As for setting BB sound output to 120% -- you may find it sounds even better when using the laptop Audio device to drive an external amplifier such as the one in your CGP100 to adjust the Playback volume output of the sound device in its Control Panel or Software Mixer by turning the output fader and Main fader is there is one, UP ALL THE WAY instead of using the Band in a Box volume preference set to 120%.
