I just bought a used Toshiba Satellite M70 laptop. It has a 1.86GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 100GB HDD and a Realtek on-board sound card. It's running Win XP Pro SP3. I have the latest sound card drivers loaded.
I installed BiaB without any issues. When I run BiaB with MME audio drivers everything works fine. When I try to use Asio4All I get the fairly well documented error message 'midi driver installed correctly but may be in use by another program' inside BiaB (and RB BTW).
I've read the relevent FAQs and the posts on the forum and I can get the error message to stop by selecting a different midi driver, say midi mapper instead of GS Wave Table. Unfortunately this only works during the current session. If I quit BiaB and restart it the message re-appears.
Does anyone know if there's a permenant fix for this issue. I'd really like to use the Asio drivers but that error message is a real pain in the butt. Thanks.
Edit: Forgot to mention I'm using the VSC DXi so the midi output driver shouldn't make any difference to either BiaB or Win XP. Even though I get the error message everything runs fine. It's just incredibly annoying.

Hello pwarren,
You may need to disable the GS wavetable in Windows.

Thanks Andrew. I'll give that a try. Unfortunately that's the only synth that my Edirol PSR M80 will play through with the current setup. It might not matter too much though since I don't use the M80 much. I could just enable it again when I need it.
In the long run I think I'm going to get the Ketron SD2 so it won't matter then at all. For now I just want to get rid of that stupid error message.

Hey,
I´ve had this issue with every computer I´ve used BIAB on for the last 2 years. Many calls and emails to Tech support have not resolved it. Like many other windows related issues, I´ve learned to grin & bear it, but can´t wait until the new Mac version.
Hope that helps, Ed

It's funny how I've had no real problems running BiaB on Win98 but when I 'upgrade' to XP this happens. Oh well. I know you have to grin and bear it with many window glitches. I can use the MME drivers without any real problems so it isn't a huge deal.

Funny thing, I never got that message for about 3 months, until I fired up Real Band for the first time. Now it comes up about 50% of the time. I just click OK, and go on.

Hi pwarren, The ASIO4ALL driver does not get along with the Microsoft GS Wavetable. You can prevent the error message by selecting a MIDI driver that does not conflict with the ASIO4ALL driver. If you do not have one, you should install the Loopbe1 driver. You can download it from the bottom of this page (it's free): http://www.nerds.de/en/download.htmlThe Loopbe1 driver is used for routing MIDI to other applications. If you are only using Band-in-a-Box, it works well as a neutral MIDI driver to have selected. Just make sure that you do not select it as the input driver as well as the output driver (it will warn you if you do), because you will get a MIDI feedback loop.

Do you know any way to disable the XP G?S Wavetable ?? I have never found a method, and I've tried and searched for years.

Delete or rename the GM.DLS file in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers - I don't recall if this simply "breaks" it or if Windows the forgets it even exists...
--=-- My credo: If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing - just ask my missus, she'll tell ya --=--You're only paranoid if you're wrong!

I am always afraid of the delete button in the system32 area. This will just make the error message go away, and no side effects? I will sure try it.

you could rename the file & then do the reverse if all does not go well

Don't delete, RENAME.
For example, change that "GM.DLS" to "~1GM.DLS"
Not only will windows no longer be able to find and use the file, it will be towards the top of List View in any folder it happens to live in, enabling you to easily find it and change it back if ever necessary.
No loss.

Hi Blake. Thanks for the info. I'll be trying out the Loopbe1 driver. Even though the info further down the page suggests disabling the GS Wave Table might be the way to go I need a synth for my keyboard controller to use so this might be the way to go.

Hi Lawrie. Thanks for the info. If the Loopbe1 driver doesn't solve the problem for me I'll try this. I really want to use ASIO4All so it's worth the loss of the GS wave table if all else fails.

Thanks to all who replied with the great suggestions.
Unfortunately, after many tries to get the error message to disappear something worse has happened to this new system and I'm hoping someone may have an idea what's wrong and how to fix it.
A few days ago I installed the old VSC3 driver in an attempt to use it as a substitute for the GS wave table. I didn't actually intend to use it as I am using the VSC DXi for midi output but I thought it might stop that darned error message. It didn't so I uninstalled the VSC3. Shortly after that I noticed my RealTracks weren't working properly.
A file I had created with RealDrums and the two RealTracks Guitar, Electric, Rhythm BB (A only) and (B only) no longer played the guitar tracks. The title indicates they are generating but there's only silence. I even tried outputting the tracks as wav files but no files are created.
I tried re-creating the song from the start but the tracks still wouldn't play. I tried other RealTracks. Some work, like the Guitar, Electric, Rhythm StoneZ Flash (A only) and (B only). Other didn't like the Guitar, Electric, Rhythm Roadhouse A and B.
I've tried everything I can think of to get these tracks working properly again. I tried return to factory settings. I tried replacing the interface.bbw file with a backup copy. I tried a reinstall of BiaB over top of the existing installation. I tried reverting to MME drivers. The only thing I haven't yet tried is a complete deletion of BiaB and a fresh install. I don't want to go that route if I don't have to because of the time involved copying all my own and 3rd party styles and songs etc. I'll do it if I have to though.
So, do any of you have any ideas what might be causing this strange RealTracks behaviour? Thanks in advance.

Hi,
In the RealTracks window, does Guitar, Electric, Rhythm Blues BB show up as being NA (not available)?
If it doesn't show up as NA, then in your bb folder do you have both RElGt023.XT2 and RElGt023.ST2 ?

Hi Andrew. The RealTracks do not show up as N/A. They are on a USB external drive and they are properly installed. I even tried playing a few of the wma files to make sure they weren't corrupted or some such and they play fine.
Both those st2 and xt2 files are there. I should add that the RealTracks in question do work properly in some files. They also create very sparse arrangements at times as well. Just a couple of chords in an entire song. It's very bizarre behaviour. Strange and very frustrating.

Hi pwarren
I have had a couple of computers both XP and Vista 32 with the same problems and with the XP one I uninstalled and deleted all traces of VSC3 and VSC DXi and rebooted
I then re-installed only VSC DXi and that worked with the standard ASIO drivers – however when I installed ASIO4ALL the problem returned again – but everything worked fine using Forte Coyote
If you open RB as well in the same session with the same driver then that may also cause the error - I use MS GS wavetable in RB
Because I have no real need for ASIO or ASIO4ALL I am using MME drivers and everything works fine
I have also used Ketron SD2 and Roland Sonic Cell and as you say this avoids any of these problems Just thought that you might be interested in my experiences with this jazzman
