Dear advanced users,

I'm fiddling around in the notation window, trying to figure out how to insert dotted quarter or dotted eighth notes and put the rests in the correct place. Is there an easy way in using the notation window?
Tips and tricks are appreciated.

Thanks !

Band in a Boz uses the easiest method of entering notation in the world.

Just click on the dotted line where you want the first note to go. It will enter a note that at first, will be way too long in duration. Don't fret. Just click on the dotted line where the second note goes and the first note will immediately become the right rhythmic value.

For Rests, there is a checkbox immediately above the Notation Edit area marked, "Rest" -- check it and you can enter one rest and the same rules apply as for the notes. After entering a Rest, the screen automatically reverts to note entry mode again, ready to enter the next note.

It takes a bit of use to get the feel of the thing, but once you do, the flow is fast and accurate and easy.

We have to leave behind the old notions that we have to specify each note duration value as we enter the notes and just click the next event and BB handles all of that.

Thanks Mac,
I think I've got it. Is it somehow possible to save the modified notation pattern within the song? - I tried but when loading the song again the changes were lost.

Regards,

Hi sep57u60,

Which track did you write the notation changes to? If they were written to the Melody or Soloist track, the changes will save with the song provided the track is not frozen and the track is not being used to support a Realtrack instrument. If you wrote notation changes to any other track, they do not save unless the changes are made and the track is then frozen.

Hope this helps,
Noel

Hi Noel96,
how can I tell if a song is frozen or not? I've simply used the song " stand by your man" from inside the repository and start playing around. How and where can I unfreeze a track?

Hi sep57u60,

Please correct me if I'm wrong but your above post sounds like you have loaded the demo song in for a style. There are a couple of styles that are listed as being suitable backings for "Stand by your man" (e.g. C_RICH, M_CSWNMD).

If the above is the case, the tracks will not be frozen.

When tracks are frozen, and asterisk appears beside the track name. The asterisk beside "Guitar" on the image below shows that the Guitar Track is frozen.

If a track isn't frozen, the most likely reason the notation is not being saved is because it's being written to some track other than Melody or Soloist. Without further information, though, this is just a guess on my part.

Regards,
Noel

Frozen tracks will have an asterisk ("snowflake" * ) in front of their tracknames.

If you try to modify notation on any of the autoaccompaniment tracks, the Style file will regenerate a new arrangement and thus overwrite that part automatically when a song is reloaded or if you hit Gen/Play.

Historically, the Melody and Soloist tracks are the only two tracks that notes manually written to will "stick" - but with the newer versions of BB that allow for Freezing of tracks, it is sometimes possible to edit a MIDI (not realtracks) track and then Freeze it.

Or - we can now also MOVE the data from a Melody or Soloist track to one of the other tracks. But be sure to Freeze it or the Style file may overwrite it next time its loaded.
