Next week I turn 60! I know you all thought I was just a young wippersnapper.
I am working on a vocal cover of "Yesterday, When I was Young". I heard Glen Campbell sing this and it simply touched me.

The problem is I get choked-up during the verses in the recording booth. I suspect if I sing it more and more I can overcome it. Anyone else have this experience? Any suggestions?

*Concentrate*

Performance is a Discipline.

Years ago, I enjoyed a Trumpet Teacher who used to explain to me, over and over again until it started to sink into this hard head, that if I personally was attempting to enjoy the *emotion* of my own performance, then I was not performing for my audience, but merely attempting to entertain my own emotions.

It took a few months, but the truth of that message got through and has ever since remained my approach.

A certain amount of emotion is good, but it must be tempered with the ability to remove yourself from the full emotional impact of a song that the *audience* or listener is looking to feel.

That's the performer's *JOB*.

When I cannot cover the thing, it is ALWAYS due to lack of proper PRACTICE on my part. The French word for practice is "repetition"...

This advice often sounds harsh, I realize that. However, it has proven itself to be the truth, time and time again.

And the truth, like a lion doesn't need to be defended. Just turn it loose and it can defend itself.

Singing is like acting, you're playing a role, telling a story. If you get tied up in the emotions you need to practice till it stops, taking care to keep the edge to it though. That is the difference between stars and the rest of them.

Anyway, you are a young wippersnapper.

Oh, how I wish! This 60 thing is hitting me hard. I have really let things go(healthwise) for so long and now this pending milestone just seems like a death knoll.

A technique I've used since my wife's passing and still having to sing those songs in public.
Play the song in private.Chocking up as you call it is actually holding back the emotion.Let the emotion release and embrace it. Cry your eyes out.Blow your nose and now record it.

I might help to imagine what Eric Clapton went through to write and record (and perform hundreds of times) his song "Tears in Heaven". I am sure you are all aware but I will point out that this song is written about the untimely death of his young son.

Congrats on turning 60. I had a hard time dealing with it too. It's been almost 18 years and a lot of water under the bridge, but I'm still here and kicking. Thankful for each breath.

P.S.

we want to hear your song when it's finished

Yesterday, when I was Young

Any suggestions on the mix before I post to my family?

Sounds good, jazzmandan,

The vocal works.

A bit heavy on the low end from the instruments, might want to EQ those tracks a bit for that.

Happy birthday jazzmandan.

Good rendition of “When I was Young”, I had forgotten all about that song until now.

Thanks for the birthday greeting. This one was a golden oldy for me too when I heard it a few weeks back and with the upcoming milestone it just seemed appropriate to crank it out. I listened to every YouTube available but Glen Campbell's version was just the sweetest...

jazzmandan -

Nice rendition a real "classic". I would guess your tweaks worked - the mix sounds good here. I like that you used Glen as your "guiding light" - he was my first musical "idol" (influence). The piano was nice. The lead guitar, too.

Happy Birthday!

I have a slightly different take on this topic:

There are some songs that have such a personal meaning, I can't make it through them. Guess what, they are not on the list of 'public performance' songs. Period.

Some I have been able to convert over to sharing with the public, record them, share them here, etc.

But some stay right here. Not too many, but some.

I'm with Scott on this one. IMO, very few people can gracefully pull off the "tearful ballad", no matter how sincere it may be. It comes across as contrived and cheesy. Better to just put that song on the back burner until it can be delivered with emotions under control
