Not long ago, I posted about my upcoming retirement and the necessity to store all of my studio gear including most of my instruments.
I have moved everything to a climate controlled location. All guitars, keyboards, recording equipment are in cases, bagged or boxed. The climate is controlled at 80 deg F. Should be good enough to protect this stuff in the brutal south Texas heat and humidity.
Anybody have any experience with long term storage of this kind of gear? Any suggestions other than what I have already done. I have Martin, Taylor and Yamaha acoustics and a couple of Strats as well as keyboard, fiddle, lap steel, trumpet. Also full compliment of live and studio electronics.

Todd,

You sound like me about 10 years ago. I could not wait and now I have a new company started working a few days a week at it and still playing 75-85 gigs a year.

But all in all I guess I am "retired" as now I am doing what "I" wanted to do with my time and none of it seems like work to me.

Congratulations and best to ya!

If your climate-controlled environment is around 50% relative humidity then you are off to a good start. If you haven’t already you should loosen the strings on all of your stringed instruments. I googled long term storage for stringed instruments and I found a lot of information there. Most stated what I have paraphrased above along with what you have already done.

I hope this helps.

My goal this weekend is to move just enough each day so that no one pokes me to see if I'm dead or not.

Thanks guys! I did not remember to loosen the strings. I will do that this weekend.

I don't know much about the guitars but I think they like humidity. On the other hand, higher humidity contributes to mold growth, yes?

So, I hope the horn is cleaned and, even more, there is no mold in the case. At the least, swab the mouthpiece and leadpipe.

And there's nothing worse than a moldy horn case. Mildew and petroleum-based valve oil is a formidable smell. I even started a discussion on Trumpet Herald asking what people did to clean a funky plush case. Lots of ideas, but the predominant decision was, throw it out. Better to prevent the problem.

Hi Matt,
I had a guy working for me from out of state who was a trumpet player. He had nothing to do in the evenings so he took my 1908 Conn Wonderphone (from my grandfather) and restored it as much as possible (short of re-plating). It still has a beautiful tone.
It should be well prepped for storage

Excellent.

Those 1900-ish Conns are works of art and usually play quite well. Congratulations!
