I'm thinking about picking up a guitar to do some country playing. I know the standard for the genre is the Telecaster through a Twin Reverb, but I was wondering if anyone uses a different setup to get that pluck and twang.
I would love to hear your setup, Tele or other.

I use a Mexi Tele.... so, yeah, tele it is...

Tele would be my first choice for country. Strat would be my second choice and it's a little more versatile.

Chick'n Pick'n can be done well on quite the assortment of electric guitars, actually.
Its been done by the greats using guitars as diverse as the old Gretsch Country Gentleman, just about all of the original 'planks' and there are even some examples of the jazzbox guitars being used as well.
There are quite a few guitars available these days that can fill the bill without breaking the bank account, and, of course, there are many tele clones out there.
The Gibson Blues Hawk guitar, with its own pickup selection with tone EQ on the rotary switch, is a sleeper in this regard that has the ability to do a lot more sounds, making it a studio session fav here.
Also the Epiphone "kat" series of guitars, my fav being the Alley Kat, which is now out of production but can sometimes be found used at attractive prices. I won't sell mine, it covers too much good territory in sound and can Chick'n pick better'n I can.
We live in fantastic times as far as guitars for the working musician go, I'm sitting here thinking about the young fella I saw in a band locally who was doin' the job as a Country lead guitarist quite well, actually, with a Yamaha Pacifica, of all things. And a Crate tube amp. He sounded great, not only on the chick'n pick, but with every other example found when doin' country covers.
So I think that what this grinds down to are two issues, actually.
One issue is the need to have a guitar that will turn in a good performance on the style at hand. That can cover a lot of territory, actually.
But there is the OTHER aspect of the thing, which may be more important to the individual player, and that is fulfilling whatever vision the individual may cherish as to what the type of guitar that will make them happy would be.

I haven't perfected the technique - but I can tell you that a strat or any other guitar with a single coil slanted in the bridge position with a bit of tone control, should do service if you can play the style. My new Epiphone Nighthawk Custom Reissue can give that tone.
Look up Lefty Jay Smith - a few folks here have collaborated with him. He can chicken pick with the best of them, and he's done quite a bit of it with under $150 strat copies from Rondo Music.
He's the guy that convinced me about 10 years ago that Rondo guitars were definitely good values.

A LOT of classic chicken pickin' was done on humbucker pickups as well.

As to pup position, I've worked with and known players who can and will chick'n pick on any pup or combination of pups.
Pickup choice is also likely dictated more on personal preference, the task at hand, whether or not a "cutting" and treble heavy "tele" type lead is desired for the song, that sort of thing. Also, there may be pickers out there who just feel more comfortable using their Neck pup rather than the Bridge pup, which can often yield more of an acoustic guitar feel when digging in.
I worked for a country band when stationed in Texas back in the 70's, with my Rhodes and B3, that band also had a very strong steel guitar player, but the Lead Guitarist was simply a terror on all things Country, Rockabilly and many forms of Rock.
He played an old Danelectro U1 single lipstick pickup hollow masonite guitar thru an old Fender tweed amp with 4 10" speakers, box stock, and his chick'n pickin' solos were awesome.
Again I stipulate that good chick'n pick'n can be done on just about *any* electric guitar, and it has certainly been historically the case.
Of course, many today view the Tele as the ultimate instrument for the job. Ain't nuthin' wrong wit dat either.

Personally, I use a strat or tele for country, because I like the pure, clean sound I get from single coils, but I've seen other people get a great country sound out of all manner of different guitars, including 335s and SGs.
I think so much of it is down to a combination of guitar, amp and playing style.

Listening to Mac's advice about fulfilling my vision, I picked up an 2012 American Standard Tele (a great deal under $800).
