Practicing with the metronome on 2 and 4 is one of the main points my teacher emphasizes every time I go for a learning session. I find it a very challenging task indeed although I find it quite easy to play with a jazz realtrack with the sock cymbal on 2 and 4. Pick up notes to phases seem to be the hardest for me when using the metronome on 2 and 4. That's why it is so important, G, it forces us to count for ourselves, ALL THE TIME. Keep working with it, start slow as you need to go, speed comes with the contempt of familiarity. After awhile, those pickup notes won't be a problem at all if you do that. And your PHRASING abilities will soar. --Mac
