This just may be the best post on the whole thread!

In all the time I've spent on forums, online bbs, etc. I have never once seen any Christian attempt to get moderators or administrators to ban discussion of topics concerning any other relgion or religious group.

It always comes from those other than true Christians, often masquerading as such. And I say that because it is simply illogical for someone who believes in Christ and has accepted the gospel to attempt to prevent any mention of same. Matter of fact, it is against one of my Lord's commands.

But my beliefs about God aside, I'll NEVER be in favor of the censor. That rubs against my basic values of freedom.

And the way I figure, it, my God is certainly big enough to defend Himself, He don't need a sinner like me to attempt that and muck it up.

Those who campaign to suppress the speech of others because they don't like what others say all too often are shocked when the censor comes for what *they* have to say as well...

there is always some level of censorship...the conversation we are having is about where we draw the line. I suspect many here would be very much opposed (and rightly so) if an Islamist group suddenly appeared here and began clogging up the forum with their religious doctrine. or if gay rights activists (who also happened to use BIAB!) began using the forum as a place to advocate their point of view.

the point is, we should keep it about the music that we ALL love! and don't worry about stifling spirited conversation...there will be plenty to fight about with the music! ("I hate jazz!", "I hate country!", etc.) laugh

I consider myself a spiritual person but also a private person concerning religion and politics. If I feel a need to talk or debate about religion or politics I'll go to an appropriate website to do that. I don't think that BIAB is the appropriate forum for this. Later, Ray

I'm a Christian go to church every Sunday, try not to do any one any harm.

I like the ritual of going to church and get some great homilys about life etc.

BUT and its a big But, I have started questioning things that I have been told. And that's the key you only believe what you have been told God only knows (pardon the pun) whether its true or not.

If there really is a God he sure had a funny way of doing things not interfering when poor little kids die in wars etc.

I have no time at all for people who try to push religion down your throat or for that matter the die hard atheists who will try to convince you of their side of things.

If it makes anyone happy to believe in a God or for that matter believe that there is some divine purpose to our lives then I am all for it as long as it does no one any harm. It sure is comforting to think that there is some Almighty Being watching over us when things go wrong, whether it true or not, sure if you are dead and there is no God you will be none the wiser since you are dead.

See my post is full of contradictions, but sometimes its nice to ask questions and not take everything that you have been told at face value.

Saying that the odd thread on the off topic forum since most of us are of a certain age won't do any harm.

But if I was to see it every day I guess I would be fed up.

My first instinct is to accommodate.

In the International Forums area start a Worship Music forum. People that like it can visit there and ask questions without concern.

If a group complains, make another Forum for that group.

OP would know to avoid that Worship forum. Much like I know to avoid the French forum .. I would have no idea what they are talking about since I don't understand French.

Political discussions don't interest or bother me much here.
Usually only half the people are right (since they are all arguing) and I can only decide who is right by referencing my point of view, so there is not much to gain there.
I have other forums I visit that are much funner for political discussions.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

the fact that they do not enforce it strictly is because usually it is not a problem. but plenty of times I have heard forum members chime in with "and this is music-related how?" on various non-music posts. so there is plenty of precedent for folks preferring we keep the conversation on music.

again, this is not the public square. this is a private forum owned and operated by PG Music. they get to make the rules and IMHO they have done so fairly clearly with #9 above.

bottom line is if you want to talk about your religion, whatever it may be, this is probably the wrong place to do it.

Ok, then no more gospel music.

in the final analysis, I see forum control to be a lot like vocal control.

1) best case is if you can control it yourself, without external influence

2) if you must use control, use it sparingly... too much external correction makes it unnatural and weird

3) if your voice (or forum) isn't perfect, but you don't want external control, it's OK to embrace the imperfection as being an integral part of your unique sound (or in the case of the forum, our collective weirdnesses and imperfections are what make the forum interesting)

To me gospel is a type of music that I will play on occasion. That certainly doesn't mean that I'm pushing religion. If I were to play Iranian or Chinese music does that mean that I'm being political? Of course not. All types of music are fair game to play without being religious or political. Later, Ray

When you start worrying about what "others" are talking about, you become like the nosy neighbor on Bewitched. If you don't like a thread, DON'T READ IT. It's not rocket science.

This is a paraphrase of a line from Huckleberry Finn. It was meant to be funny, and to be read in context.

You got it! And it was written by Mark Twain, someone who had utter comtempt for religion, ridiculed and lampooned it his whole life. So I think he meant what Huck said.

PG obviously doesn’t have a rule against talking about politics and religion anymore, so as long as people do it in a civil manner then no one can quote rule numbers as a reason to prohibit it.

I just hope we all keep in mind how easy it is to misunderstand someone’s intentions when you can’t see their facial expressions and body language.
