A friend of mine is an accomplished musician, and wants to make a CD of jazz tunes, as a physical CD and available on iTunes. He wants to self publish, rather than find a publisher. He was asking me a "how do I do that" question, as he has typically used a publisher in the past.
He'd be playing standards, so would need to pay royalties for compositions. Those would likely be the only applicable royalties. He would have the tunes in final audio format, ready to go on the CD.
So now he would need to learn: - how to get songs on iTunes, and pay royalties for iTunes sales. - how to get physical CD's made, and pay royalties on sales.
He doesn't want to learn all that, wants to hire a service that would do it for a fee,
Ideally, I think he'd want the following services from a company: - send audio to the company, with graphics, get back say 1,000 copies of the CD, and be able to order more when needed. - company has some kind of fulfillment service so if people want to buy a physical CD, they can go to a site and order it. - the company pays the royalties for song compositions. - gets song on iTunes So, my question is, are there companies that help with that, ie) provide one-stop service for self-publishing a CD? Or is so easy that people just do it themselves or ?
Have Fun! Peter Gannon PG Music Inc.

My brother, Marshall, recently did his "Standardize" CD via CD Baby. http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/marshallmcdonald As the title implies, it is a compilation of Standards. CD Baby can do it all, including registration with ASCAP/BMI http://members.cdbaby.com/ Nice one stop shopping. --Mac

Peter, I've taken a hard look at Oasis CD Mfg. ( http://www.oasiscd.com/). Like CD Baby, they provide turnkey services, web hosting (free for a time if you had a disk made by them), and much more. Richard

CD Baby as mentioned above is used by several folks. Just listening to them think maybe the marketing is better with them. This company can satisfy below: Ideally, I think he'd want the following services from a company: - send audio to the company, with graphics, get back say 1,000 copies of the CD, and be able to order more when needed. - company has some kind of fulfillment service so if people want to buy a physical CD, they can go to a site and order it. - the company pays the royalties for song compositions. - gets song on iTunes Other member recomended this to me. You can buy small amounts and get hi quality. And they are fast company. Their manufacturing and ordering system is a Robot in almost everyway. I have purchased about 70-80 CD's on several different small orders. They assign a legitmate Barcode with the order and its yours as long as at least 1 cd is purchased within a 6 month window. The FAQ's on the site really answer questions. Also bit of Google exploration with resolve manufacturing questions and also about the company. http://kunaki.com/home.aspBTW, this was a fun project also. Kind of a Bucket list item for me.. Did not place link to the pseudo sales site they sponsor. Its there, but its sales and marketing would not hold a candle to CD baby. If wanted and allowed, will add the link to the CD.... Also enter kunaki review into google and read the gearslutz thread.....

Peter, Have him check out CDBaby for the cd and distribution to iTunes, etc. Harry Fox Agency for the cover rights fees. He will be considered the "pubisher" by his PRO(ASCAP, BMI or SESAC)in USA if he doesn't have a separate publishing company set up for his originals. In other words he will own all the rights to his own stuff whether he decides to set up his own publishing company or not. Some people do and some don't. http://members.cdbaby.com/http://www.harryfox.com/There's also www.discmakers.com for cds and www.tunecore.com for distribution but CDBaby is a onestop does it all and have added even more services with their new Pro offering (for a little higher fee of course). Hope that is helpful.

Another vote for Oasis then CD Baby.
Several years ago, I had to register separately with Sound Exchange (to collect Internet royalties). I believe that is now part of the services offered by CD Baby as an option, along with registering you for PRO.

It should be noted that Discmakers and CD Baby are the same company (Discmakers bought CD Baby a while back). I understand that Oasis is also some sort of partner with Discmakers or that, at least, they manufacture in the same facilities.
