I apologize if this is posted to the wrong forum, but I was wondering if anyone has ever seen BIAB files for the examples used in Mark Levine's The Jazz Theory Book? I scanned through the Yahoo BIAB databases, but didn't see anything. A search using "Levine band in a box" came up with a Yahoo discussion that leads to a site with mp3 files of those riffs made from BIAB, but not the original BIAB files.

I'd appreciate any leads, if they exist. Thanks.

I have the book but have never seen mention of BIAB supporting files. If anyone has made them, I am interested also.

I've come up with nothing after several lengthy searches. If I find something in the future, I'll post here.

I wonder if you might be successful by contacting Mark? Perhaps he or one of his students has made the BIAB files. If not, maybe he would be interested in having them done to support his book. By the way, does the book have a supporting web site?

I don't have a copy of the Levine handy here, but be advised that quite a few jazz instruction books use chord changes from other well known standards for their examples.

Substituting your own composed melody over the same chord changes means that you don't have to deal with the copyright or royalty issues.

So you guys might go through those songs looking for chord changes recognizable from the Standards.

Best to do that using the numbers rather than the chordnames, as the key may be changed from the original as well.

Once you know the Standard - if that is the case here - you might find a BiaB file already made of that Standard and just use that, mute or change melody track if need be, etc.

It seems to me that there is no need to find BIAB files for Mark's examples. Just make your own midi files. Very easy. Later, Ray

Well, aren't the chords in the book?

Type 'em into the chord grid and get busy practicin'.

You don't have to do them all at once...

Note: mp3 files are available. You could import these files into BIAB, convert, and use. Just a bit more effort.

Thought you might enjoy this post on Mark Levine's Facebook page today:

Thank you, Jazz Times and ESPERANZA SPALDING!

RV: What advice would you give to middle school or high school students who want to play jazz?

ES: There’s a Mark Levine Book called Jazz Theory. It’s really just theory that most musical genres function off of. It’s fun to get a sense of what’s going on with music anyway. I would suggest getting it and doing two pages a day just to study it and learn to read some basic piano, even if you can only pick out one note at a time. I think it’s really important for all musicians to have a basic ability to read piano music, it’s not like you have to be able to sight read Bach inventions, but just to know where the notes are to pick them out on the piano. Start by reading two pages, then practice the two pages. The next day recap what you’ve done and do a page or two more. I think if you’re starting in middle school or high school just work your way through that book and as you work through it you’ll notice the way you hear and the way you sing, will automatically start to change. It’s like looking at the world and not knowing it’s all blurry. You can make your way through and then you get glasses and everything gets clearer and clearer. I think that’s really important.

See the OP. I didn't write down the site, but if you repeat the search you'll find them (in a guitar site).
