As the composer declared when he got his peanut vending license re-newed...I'm Bach in bidness!
I just kept uninstalling stuff until it started to work. I know that's not very scientific but it will get me by temporarily until I can ponder some more. I am so sick of uninstalling that I am spitless. Fortunately, I haven't started removing mp3s yet.
Hopefully, I can apply you wonderful peoples' tweaks tomorrow.

Audacity works well for grabbing audio from the web.

After struggling and tweaking for three days I ran a system benchmark test and got 2.2 out of 7.8 possible. This baby is heading for Pennsylvania (Dynavox factory).
Thanks all, for the tweaks and suggestions.
BTW, the data transfer rate was good so that's not the bottleneck. I suspect the inadequate CPU.

I would be surprised if the hardware outran the CPU.
Just ain't normal.
Task Manager should yield clues if so. Is the processor overloaded, or working in bursts?
Short bursts are normal; that means the CPU is waiting on data, then processing it fast as it needs to, then waiting again
It's usually somewhere in the path. If you see those bursts, the processor is waiting for data (from the path).
If CPU stays above 50% all the time, you may be right, but that is very uncommon.
Data transfer rate can mean many things. Transferred from where to where? And measured from where?

Don, the Windows system benchmark test gives you a total score that is equal to the worst performing component of your system. It is not an average, it is a worst-case. What were the individual readings, or at least, which one gave the 2.2 reading?

Matt, here are the stats:
Processor: 2.2
Memory (RAM): 4.3
Graphics: 4.5
Gaming graphics: 2.6
Primary hard disk: 5.9
Base score: 2.2 (Determined by lowest subscore).
"The Windows Experience Index assesses key system components on a scale of 1.0 to 7.9"
I have no clue what all of this means but I am very disappointed with slowness and poor performance overall.
I plan to return it for repair but I fear Dynavox will say it's performing within spec. My only argument then will be that it performed much better when new. I have the original disks but I'm hesitant to overwrite stuff.
I'll see what Dynavox Support suggests.

Those are surprisingly good scores for an Atom processor and 1 GB of RAM. It is also surprising that your hard drive is your fastest component.
So, since you say you did the software tweaks we gave you, I'm puzzled as to why you have such degradation from when the system was new.

The hard disk is being rated at a 5.9 because the CPU is controlling it in PIO mode right now. That yields an erroneous reading because the program is assuming DMA mode.
It likely needs to be restored to DMA mode, as I've been saying all along, but it may also be a sign that the drive has problems and needs to be replaced.
Hopefully Dynavox will get to the bottom of that.

Wow, I am surprised. The Processor actually is your lowest score. I was surprised by the HD score also. Something looks 'off' with those results. To check drive Mode (DMA/PIO) in Windows 7 see image below. Clickie path - Start Computer System Properties Device Manager (there are other ways to get to this point, but once in Device Manager ..) Click View - Devices by connection = Number 1 in image below Look for ATA Channel controller (drive controller) = Number 2 Right-Click and select Properties (not shown) In resulting window click Advanced tab = Number 3 Then Number 4 should appear.

Rharv, I get to VIEW then I see on top of options: ACPI x86-based PC Properties then GENERAL / DRIVER / DETAILS
Under the Properties drop-down, I see about 40 options, none of which mean anything to me.
Am I on the wrong track.
I could pay for your time if you'd 'ava squint.

If rharv can take remote control of it, that might just work out.
rharv, I've seen a few cases where the darn thing reports DMA in the Windows props, but the thing still ran slowly and stuttered audio, just like Don reports.
So I toggle it to PIO then back to DMA and reboot in between.
And then it gets fast again.
Also, I usually run ccleaner on it afterwards, then I use Defraggler to at least check fragmentation and its nice Disk Health section as well. It seems that fragmentation can lead to whatever number of lost reads Windows thinks is enough in a row to revert the disk automatically to the dreaded PIO.

Also, at the very top of my list in the same 'view' I see similar to "ACPI x86-based PC Properties"
In that same View you need to use the tiny little arrows on the left to dig down until you see the device I have the #2 arrow pointing at.
It is a drive controller. Very likely labeled ATA Channel 0
This label will often appear even if a SATA drive is installed, like this one in my example. It's a windoze thang.
If you right-click that item you'll get to the right spot and have the #3 tab available so you can see #4.
