If rharv can take remote control of it, that might just work out.

rharv, I've seen a few cases where the darn thing reports DMA in the Windows props, but the thing still ran slowly and stuttered audio, just like Don reports.

So I toggle it to PIO then back to DMA and reboot in between.

And then it gets fast again.

Also, I usually run ccleaner on it afterwards, then I use Defraggler to at least check fragmentation and its nice Disk Health section as well. It seems that fragmentation can lead to whatever number of lost reads Windows thinks is enough in a row to revert the disk automatically to the dreaded PIO.
