I would like to find some midi editing software to drop a song in after creating it in BIAB and adding some midi parts. I have a really old version of cakewalk, but it doesn't handle WAVs or VSTs. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Rich:

You could check out Cakewalk's Sonar x2 Essential for $99
http://www.cakewalk.com/products/SONAR/X2-Essential/
or their Music Creator 6 or $ 49
http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/MusicCreator/features.aspx#Music-Creator-6-Touch

I believe either of those would give you midi editing and allows for VSTs and WAVs.

You could also check out Reaper for $ 60

Rich, I use SONAR for MIDI editing (although I also use BIAB a lot, too). I'm not sure what MIDI editing features come with the less expensive versions of SONAR, though.

Something to consider is that you can edit MIDI several ways: musical staff view (traditional notation), piano roll view, or step-by-step editing of events in a text presentation. While SONAR's staff view has some shortcomings, some other DAWs have no staff view editing at all. Check that before purchasing.

Not sure which version you have, but RealBand has some very powerful
editing abilities. Copy/paste, Piano Roll editor. Make sure
you explore this avenue prior to new purchases.
RealBand which is a more powerful version of Power Tracks pro is
good all around piece of software.
Power Tracks pro standalone is about $50.

Don't think you need PT pro if you have RealBand.

I like to do my midi editing in staff view or event view. I'll take a closer look at RealBand and see if it does what I want.

Thanks

I use Reaper. I have a 'paid for' copy but it can also be used without paying for as it has a never ending expiry date when run as a trial version. The trial version is the full program.

Check out Anvil Studio, it is a free software for midi and wav files.

You are on the right track IMO.
If you like BiaB features, RB is a great DAW alternative.
Others may have different features, or approach things differently, but you already own it and it seems to meet the described need. Plus it supports BiaB features far more than any other DAW.

I think PGMusic needs to emphasize the RB features more since it is a free addition to BiaB, but I'm just an internet marketing guy, what do I know?

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Yes, indeed, Realband, using the good old Powertracks Pro Audio basic engine, but adding the Band in a Box Generator as well as a few other features, is a very good sequencing/multitracking program that is designed to work hand in hand with Band in a Box AND MIDI files.

Just to make it clear Rich, yes RB has both staff and event views for midi events. It's very compresenive but it's not as full featured as some other big name DAW's like Studio One's comp tracks folders, Melodyne integration and other things you may not be able to live without but then again the price is right and RB is still pretty cool. I like it a lot.

I tend to like Power Tracks Pro Audio for this. Working in PTPro just seems less cluttered and simpler for me when I don't need the BiaB regeneration of Real Band anymore.

But that's just personal preference. You can do just fine in RB.
