The 101 Jazz Guitar Riffs are great, but 101 of them? Has anybody made it through the first dozen?
Cheers! -Alastair

"Not enough!" is what I'd say.
I don't approach them as something to have to learn one at a time in numerical fashion, though.
I do approach them on the basis of what I hear that I'd like to add to my own personal arsenal, though.
I will play them back using the Random setting using the Jukebox feature, often while doing something else at the puter, like tending to these forums, etc.
When I hear one that stands out, to my ears and thinking at the time, I will jot that one into Notepad file I keep on the desktop for the purpose.
If you are like me, there is usually a song that I've been working out on that is in my mind at the time, this means that when I hear the example played over the certain change and I know that it is not something I would go for or think of, but fits, well, I make a note of that one's number in Notepad and at some practice session or other will try to get that one and incorporate it.
I also don't try to NAIL the darn thing in the sense that I'm just regurgitating it, IMO that's Classical Music.
Well, at first I'll go for nailing it, but all too soon I'm trying to personalize that new tidbit somehow.
Again, its well, Jazz.
Close enough.

Thanks, Mac. Your random approach sounds like a good one to deal with the sheer volume. Myself, I'd prefer some additional order and explanation: maybe categorizing by Swing vs BeBob, or grouped by common progression (e.g., II-V-Is), or "in the style of". Meanwhile I'll just keep plugging away. (I find I learn something in each one, even if the overall riff does't appeal to me.)
Cheers! -Alastair

I'd rather have, "too many" than, "not enough"...
I think it is your perspective of the thing, try not to view it as a course, per se, in which you must be graded, view it as a resource that can be used from time to time to add to your arsenal of improvisational moves.
After all, if it is a course you want, PGMusic has plenty of other resources available that are indeed presented as lessons, complete with examples played by the virtual but live human teacher. The Jazz Guitarist and all the rest.
Have Fun,

Mac, By "The Jazz Guitarist and all the rest" do you mean PG's Essential Jazz Guitar, Jazz Guitar Master Class, or Master Jazz Guitar Solos? Do you recommend any of them? BTW I'm not keen on copying solos using tablature. I convert the notes to scale degrees and play from those - that way I know what 's being played.
Cheers! -Alastair

I mean ALL of them. Great stuff.
Of course, you should take a good look at the various descriptions and decide for yourself where to begin, which one seems apropos or the most interesting to you.
The sincere student of jazz guitar should look into the ones in which Oliver Gannon is the key instructor, IMO.

Not enough... 101 is only the beginning.
You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.
