Scotty Barnhart is the section leader of the Trumpets in the current Count Basie Orchestra. An educator, session man, bandleader, he covers it all.

Here we see an insight into a recording session where there is little time to get it in the can, and they are awaiting the arrival of Herlin Riley with his tambo.

Note how Herlin is sight reading the chart as Scotty explains what's about to go down, then they are in the room and it is One Take, Jake.

And - don't know about you, but I'm thinkin' that the tambo part is what really makes the tune DANCE.

Herlin is standing squarely on the shoulders of the greats, like the late great Jack Ashford, who laid down those marvelous tambo parts for the original Motown recordings with the Funk Brothers.

The man adds something that is worth waiting for...

That's Oh, So Nice.
