you're right. It doesn't...yet

everybody's hoping that the next version will be 64 bit. Until then, you can work in the other direction... starting the project in BIAB, then sending the tracks to Sonar where you can use all of your 64 bit stuff to fine tune the project.

Pat is correct, and this would be the same problem with any 32-bit application and a 64-bit VST. As he said, move the MIDI from BIAB to SONAR and work from there.

I work in Sonar.....although it is a 32 bit OS, I do not use BB/RB as a VST even though it can be used that way.

I start writing the song in BB and get it how I want it there. tempo, style, structure, 100% complete....

Then I save it and close BB and open Real Band and load the file I just saved. It renders the same tracks but now, instead of the RT or midi, it renders in a similar style with the Real Band tracks. This is done with the samples and sounds so much better. IN addition, I can now choose instruments and players that are not part of the original BB style. This gives such a wide variation to the music that the song will take on an entirely different feel. Most times, this is a desired improvement. Nothing like throwing a dobro and a fiddle in on the LA Hard Rock style to shake things up and get some interesting results. Swap the drummer in that style to the Nashville drummer, and see what happens.

I then save that file in Real Band and export the tracks I want as Audio Wave tracks. These are stored in a folder on my desktop and I can import them into Sonar with ease and work on them using the audio capabilities of Sonar. The bit rate of the OS doesn't even come into play in this manner.

Have a listen to a few of my songs to hear what the results of working in this manner sound like.

Guitarhacker....

I did take the opportunity to listen to some of your music on your website and I wanted to say you do some great work with BIAB and Real Tracks!!!

Curious though, on the song: "I Know You're Up To It", there is a short sax part that sounds very realistic! Can you tell me what you used or how you did that sax part?

Just a clarification about the SONAR mentions above.

Recent versions of SONAR come with DVDs for both 32-bit and 64-bit. With a 32-bit Windows, you can only install the 32-bit SONAR. With a 64-bit Windows, you have a choice. Not only that, but you could install BOTH. One of the great features of SONAR is that every version goes into its own folder, allowing you to have several versions installed. This means you could work on a song in one version but then move it to another to take advantage of other features. 64-bit plugins would be a good example of something that would not work in 32-bit.

Yes. That is a great song and it was fun to work on.

The sax was a Real Band track. I compose the music in BB and then render ALL my tracks in Real Band. In this case the style I used did not have a sax but in RB you are free to add whatever instrument tracks you desire into your project. I selected a Sax.

I export the tracks out of RB and into Sonar where I do my mixing and polishing. I use envelopes in Sonar to bring the instruments in and out for their fills and parts so they don't play constantly in the song.

Hope that helps. If you have any other specific questions, let me know.

When you say you selected a sax in Real Band, did you use a VST sample for the sax? or did you select a sax sound on a sound module? I was interested to find out what was used to create the sax sound you used. Also I'm confused as to whether you played the sax part on a keyboard, typed in the notes, or used the notes that were originally assigned to a different instument, e.g. a trumpet?

Again, I thought the song and especially that sax fill-in part were very well done, and wanted to duplicate what you did for that sax part.

Somebody doesn't realize what the RealInstruments that come bundled with Band in a Box and RealBand are.

They are NOT MIDI sound based. Not MIDI single note samples at all.

They are based on using real recordings of real live sax players, yet the genius coding allows them to play over the chords we type into the chord grid.

And thus, they are truly a composite of phrases played by real live players in a studio setting. Many of the actual session players for each of the realtracks are listed by name in the program.

Aha... Thanks Mac, that's what I was missing.

I didn't initially understand that he used a predefined RealInstrument sax track and faded the track in as needed. The parts of the sax track that he faded in just happened to fit so perfectly with the song and style that to my ear it sounded like he programmed in the sax notes.

This is obviously a feature that I need to get more familiar with and try to use as well as Guitarhacker does!!

You should understand what Real Band is. That may help you to understand it better.

Real Band and the real tracks are not midi, or synths. They are samples from a real sax that was recorded in a studio..... note by note, articulation by articulation. Through the process that PG music knows better than I, Real Band creates that track by itself using an algorithm based on the style, the tempo, the player in that style, and creates the music. Its a real sax played by real band in the style of a certain sax player.

So I didn't tell it what to play nor did I play the part. As a matter of fact, if I was to open that file again in Real Band, and delete that sax part and then tell it to recreate that part.... the next render would be different than the one I deleted. It would be similar, but would have different notes.

I have used that ability.... that each render IS unique, to my advantage. Listen to the song on my music site called "The Best Christmas"..... now some back ground. I played NOTHING on that song. However, for the sake of this post, the piano fills are taken from 3 different piano tracks. All rendered from the same real track... 3 different times. the guitar solo is from the same guitar solo real track rendered 5 unique times and the resultant solos and fills are the result of creative editing between those tracks.

Below is a screen shot of the piano fills in the beginning of the song. You can see that one fill can be two different tracks.

I hope that explains it. So, you could do something similar with BB/RB but the chance of getting an exact reproduction of that sax line is slim at best.

If you have specific questions, simply ask here or by PM.

I am amazed at times, at how well real band will render parts. Listen to the song at the top of my sound click page... in particular the steel and fiddle.... this program blows me away some times.

Having said that... I sometimes have to render a real track several times to get something that sounds right and fits perfectly. (see my former post on the best christmas) I use Sonar to mix and edit the music and that is where and how I can do the things I do.... Every song I write takes a trip through 3 pieces of software... Band in a Box > Real Band > Sonar. Each one does a specific thing really well.

It would be nice to see the same screen shot in RB.
Then more users could relate to it.

Or maybe just me.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome
