Hi Forum,

When I play several midi files in succession, I sometimes experience hanging notes when I start a new song. When I press the panic button it usually stops but the sound is disturbed. I cannot use this in a live performance.

Is there any way to send not off messages automatically at the end of each song?

Thank you for your help.

You might insert Controller #123 at the end of each song via the Event List Editor.

Midi is nice but audio can be processed with better effects and there is a lot you can do to it to make it very real, and it loads fast.

Insert CC123 at the end of every song's MIDI Event List.

CC123 is a General MIDI standard command of "all notes off" and does what the "Panic Button" in most sequencing softwares actually does.

Good choice, because all we have to remember is, "one, two, three". Back in the day, there were no Panic Buttons.

The hanging notes are a problem with files that have Pads, Strings or other held notes when you use the VSC synthesizer. Known bug, no fix. Except doing the above, which works. This is because most MIDI files do not include MIDI Note-Off commands because using just MIDI Note-On plus duration results in much smaller filesizes and less throughput. Using the old Note-Off command after every note can even hang some MIDI making systems, so it isn't really used as intended when they first designed the MIDI standard way back when.

Thank you Mac,

But the Midi events list looks like an excel spreadsheet. It is also specific to a channel. Where exactly do I insert the 123 or do I insert CC123. I'm really new at this. Thank you.

CC123 us defined as "ALL notes off" which means that it is supposed to turn all 16 MIDI channels off at that point no matter what channel you place it on in the sequence. However, I do like to put something like that at the end of the "offending" track if I know which one it is, helps to locate it later and such.

First select the Track that has the offending held note. Click on its number in Track View, the little number should turn red to show that it has been selected.

Then locate the toolbar icon with the big 'E' on it and hit it.

The Event List will open, scroll all the way down to the end and click to highlight the last entry there. It is highlighted when it has a little box outline around it.

Hit the Insert button to the right and then choose "Control Change" from the next window that opens.

Hit 'Okay'

In the little window next to "Controller" type 123

Below that, in the Level window type 127

Hit Okay, then close the Event List window.

Don't forget to Save the song like that, you have a choice to save as .SEQ which will only open in RealBand or PT, or save as a Standard MIDI file, which can be opened by any MIDI program including BIAB.

Saxy, just some friendly advice. I'm going to assume and yes I know what the first three letters spells, I'm assuming you've downloaded a bunch of midi's thinking, wow with these and my PC I can go do a gig! Been there, done that. Downloaded midi's are notorious for having wrong commands in them of many different types not just hung notes, playing the wrong volume, the wrong instrument at the wrong time of the tune, it ritards where you don't expect it because somebody inserted tempo commands, stuff like that. That's why Robh suggested if you can get midi's to play correctly at least once, you convert them to audio files. Since you've already said you know nothing about midi, you're courting disaster on a live gig until you become a certified midiot. Trust me on this. I'm leaving for vacation tomorrow so I can't enlighten you on all the details but there's lots of threads on this subject in these forums.

I agree completely, with JM, midi's are great but they can be complicated. Once i get the song sounding like i want i convert all tracks to audio. Then I can add effects and such, and mix and master to taste. This gives me a very fast loading file. Some midi tracks are excellent, and some are problimatic, it take a bunch of work.

Question: If I convert my midi tracks to audio, will I still be able to see the staff view. I play the melody from the staff view. Thank you.

You will not see Staff View from Audio tracks.

However, you could leave the MIDI track there to play along with the Audio track, just MUTE the MIDI or don't route it to a synth. As long as the Audio and MIDI stay at the same tempo, you should be able to read the MIDI notes as the Audio plays back in sync.

I think a better method would be to make the audio file and also PRINT sheet music from the MIDI tracks you need onto plain paper and view the paper while playing along with an mp3 file. That way you really don't need a computer on the gig, just an mp3 player hooked to the PA system and your book of pages.

If you must read off the laptop, consider storing the MIDI notation as .pdf files to read while you play along with mp3 audio files.

And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
