I find the melody and chord structure very pleasing indeed – in both the verse and chorus.

The choice of instruments, pauses, tempo and overall balance are also quite excellent to my ears.

Most of the points I would look into concern the lyrics.

Count me among those who don’t get the preacher verse either.
If it were : “I was going to be a preacher (in a Church – presumably Catholic – in which priests remain single and celibate)….until I met you…”

…then it would make more sense.

Wouldn’t the imminent arrival of the baby bring our protagonist even closer to his ambition of becoming a priest?

I’ve read your post #223086 of course, Pete, but I still don’t feel this is the interpretation most listeners would make of the lyric as presented.

I also have a bit of an issue with V1: “my world was falling” ?
Here we have a guy who clearly has a job, an enchanting wife/girlfriend, a truck!!

Surely this wonderful woman would have given him the perspective to see that what he was experiencing was the proverbial bad day at the office. OK, the truck’s broke, the toolkit’s gone and he’s late for work – but “my world was falling”??.

No one’s died, no houses burnt down, wife not caught in bed with best friend etc (see the Country repertoire for what really can go wrong in a song)..

Thus, I don’t find this verse entirely convincing.

Also, at 4:20 I find the piece perhaps a little long.

Why is it always the ones who literally worship lyrics like the Beatles wrote that want clarification on everybody else's lyrics?

Is this for the benefit of Mister Kite or will there be a show tonight?

Or maybe they just want to get within you and without you...

It is for these very reaons (I don't want my lyrics pulled apart and I have neither the patience nor the arguments to justify them) that I never post my own lyrics here (or anywhere else) and try to make my delivery mainly unintelligible!

Hey mglinert and Mac,

I'm having a blast reading your posts. Rule #1 for a songwriter - you must have the skin of a rhino. Believe me I've been torn apart by the best. Only a beginner thinks their song is the greatest ever written. I've had my song characters lose family members, lose parts of their body, get divorced, seduced, lose their money, their farm, and their credit rating. I just try to write from my head and heart (half the 4H approach) and hope that some of the people like it some of the time. And as Bob said, 'Don't Look Back.

Oh, and mglinert,

You should really be a hillbilly to properly appreciate this song. There were no Catholic churches in the town I grew up in. It was only in later years I learned that the girl that lived across the street was Catholic, which explained her seemingly promiscuous nature, actually it was just that the rest of us were repressed. There wasn't even a bar in town.

This post used to contain a link to a Frank Zappa song.

Wasn't family oriented...
