Hi family: How about a Dell, All-in-One XPS 27 (64bit), I7, 16gigs, Nvidia 2 gigs? I'm trying to install my BIAB 11 on it, but can't seem to get any midi going. The REALTRACKS play fine, but no midi yet. I know it's probably "pilot error". Thanks, JZ
Having fun!

When you go into Preferences, MIDI driver, what are your options for output?

Right. If you don't have a midi interfcae that's what it would say. Have you check the "use DXi/VSTi" box?

Indeed, you would either have to add a hardware MIDI synth, or use a DXi.

You need to select and install a default synth. Without a synth you have no sound.
You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

Wouldn't the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth and/or Microsoft Midimapper just be there "automatically"?

Wouldn't the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth and/or Microsoft Midimapper just be there "automatically"? Not necessarily. It wasn't on either of my computers. I had no midi sound from BB until I loaded/installed TTS as the default synth. The first time I installed I did not know that and called PG support. The tech answering the call asked me if I had installed a synth and then guided me through the process. I also believe the wavetable synth is built into some of the sound cards but not all of the cards will have it. Wavetable is not the best sounding synth which is why softsynths are popular.

Ok, Matt. I'll try my hardware synth. I just thought I could use the software synth that used to come with BIAB. I'll keep everybody posted.
Having fun!

If you play a midi file with WMP or some other midi player (like Van Basco), do you get midi playback? If so, I think Windows can find your default midi output device, but BIAB just doesn't know about it. In Van Basco (and a million other midi players) you van view the list of midi output devices, and select one. My current and previous computers all showed the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth and/or Microsoft Midimapper without me having to do anything. As Guitarhacker said, not the best, but that's not the point here.
My current computer is W7. I don't see that you you stated your OS. What is it? That may be significant.

The microsoft wavetable synth is indeed a software synthesizer. It is not built into the soundcard. The samples used in the microsoft wavetable synth are from Edirol/Roland and used under license. But I do agree that it can sound rather cheezy. --Mac

Johhny, the softsynth that was pretty good that came with BIAB was the Roland VSC. Unfortunately, you are now on a 64-bit machine, and the VSC has not been updated to work in 64-bit. That's why BIAB now ships with a free Coyote WaveTable synth. It's not as good as the Coyote Forte or the old VSC, but at least it's something. Perhaps that is what you were thinking of?

That was it, Matt! You got it! I had forgotten . . . but that was what I was thinking of and now I do remember, it's not for a 64 bit machine. JZ

Johnny, you have a good computer, are you also running Biab 2013? It now includes Sampletank with the new HQ patches. Those sound pretty good and are dead simple to use.
If you have an older version you can still go to IKMultimedia's site and download the free Sampletank that comes with some sounds and then they have sales all the time where you can buy a whole library of sounds for under a hundred bucks. But, it's not as simple as a true GM synth like the old VSC which is why PG came up with the HQ Sampletank patches.

Johnny said in the first post that BB ver11 is in use there.
I'm not sure it can run Sampletank, at least not in the same fashion as we now run it under BB2013.
Should check with PGMusic Support on that one before downloading and attempting to install.

OK and thanks for all the help, guys. I plugged my old Edirol SD-80 in and I was so surprised, Windows 8 went and looked for new drivers. It found them, installed them and it's working. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound as good as my old scc1 card which is IDE, but at least it works on my 64 bit system (thanks Matt)!
Having fun!

Glad you have a good setup in Windows 8. I always liked my SD-80. I only stopped using it when I got the next step up, a Fantom XR.
Did you download the .PAT file for BIAB for the SD-80? There are a few out there, but I recommend using just the SD-80/90 one, that Jim Foley and I wrote. FYI, the 80 and 90 are identical as far as MIDI.

Going to get BIAB 2013 (can't wait). By the way all, When making a "final" .WAV file, not everything is recorded (again using SD-80). After downloading latest DELL drivers, (still doesn't work)I've been looking for a program some have recommended, FREECORDER. Good program?
