I have BIAB ver. 2011 and have loved using it. I also use other music/audio programs: Transcribe; Sound Forge Audio Studio ver. 9.0 which I no longer use,(which has a Steinberg/Yamaha Sound card - AISO); Turtle Beach Audio Advantage external Amigo II sound card with Dragon Speaks (a dictation program); Audacity...

I have had intermittent problems with BIAB. Right now, in the Chord Sheet Window, I click on a song to start and the "click intro track" sounds and then there is NO further sound. I have spent time with tech support and the good person there tells me it is not a problem with BIAB...the problem is with my computer. At least my "Transcribe" program is working now.

I'm thinking there are problems with conflicting drivers. I want to use an ASIO driver and I have in the past installed the ASIO4ALL driver; but, after checking, it is apparently not installed right now.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I have thought about getting a separate computer for just music. But my computer "expert" tells me I'll probably have the same problems since it results from using so many different devices.

Should I remove all drivers and install the ASIO4All and see if it works for all my programs...?? Or what?

Thank you... Tom

I'll get started here. Let's start at the beginning. Some of this will be over simplified.

A computer has hardware devices, like sound cards, and then it has programs you run (software), like those you mentioned. The sound cards (including whatever is built-in) have drivers, which often include a choice between ASIO and WDM. Another way to say this is that the drivers do not come with the software programs, they come with the hardware.

About ASIO, you do not NEED to use ASIO. In certain cases, such as playing or recording a keyboard that uses a program for its sound (software synth), you might. Otherwise, it is not necessary. Sometimes the WDM works better, sometimes the ASIO driver; you have to try it or follow the manufacturer's instructions.

ASIO4ALL is not ASIO. It is a wrapper that adapts WDM to look like ASIO to a music program.

Now, about your system, if you can hear a CD playing on your computer, you have a soundcard (it may be built-in to the motherboard). We need to know whatever you can tell us about that.

BIAB generates two very different kinds of music. One is MIDI, which has no sound at all and requires a hardware device or software synth to play the instructions MIDI sends. We need to know what you have for that. The other type of sound is audio, and that is just like your CD would make. If you use RealTracks in BIAB, and RealDrums, you would hear the sounds even if you have nothing to play MIDI.

So, please tell us about your computer. And look in BIAB under the Options menu, MIDI/Audio Drivers and tell us what your choices are for Output Drivers and Synthesizer/Sound Card. If nothing else, for the MIDI Output, choose Microsoft MIDI Mapper for now, just so you can hear something.

BIAB 2025 Win Audiophile. Software: Studio One 7 Pro, Swam horns, Acoustica-7, Notion 6, Song Master Pro, Win 11 Home. Hardware: Intel i9, 32 Gb; Presonus 192 & Faderport 8, Royer 121, Slate VSX, Adam Sub8 & Neumann 120 monitors.

Two sound cards in a computer often conflict but can work OK. I had a Dell (still do) that I was able to use the external interface and the factory card at the same time. One recording and playing back and the other running BB.

They were using different drivers. ASIO will not share devices.... it only runs on one thing at a time. MME doesn't care.

Go back to the basics. Use one card and a driver that works with it. I would not uninstall anything just yet. Start BB and set the driver to MME. try it. By all means, do have all the external interfaces and sound cards disconnected.

You said you hear the count in but then nothing..... will it play audio tracks? Real Tracks? Do you have your synth properly installed?

I'm thinking if you hear the count in you should hear the music if it's there.

Matt is correct when he says you don't NEED to run ASIO unless the software or the hardware requires it as do some of the better DAW's and interfaces. Factory cards work fine NOT using ASIO..... sometimes ASIO will not let them work properly.

laugh I use three! Firewire ASIO - Presonus, a Behringer USB ASIO driver, and the PC's inbuilt card for WDM/Games audio and general PC music playback. If setup correctly they all play along nicely. Note though, that each uses a separate protocol smile

If you are not using VSTi's ( apostrophe used because VSTis looks funny wink ) then WDM is fine (in fact if you want ASIO like audio you can use the Microsoft WASapi drivers instead - assuming you are running W7 and above)

As the other guys have written, I would look to settings and installations and also advise what type of tracks you want to have BIAB play for you.

One of your other audio programs, likely Dragon Speaks, is probably locking your soundcard to 48KHz after using it.

Band in a Box must run at 44.1KHz.

Search the Control Panel for your soundcard for a Setting that allows a host program to grab control of the bitrate setting.

Hopefully your soundcard and its software has such a command.

And BTW, if you want to install ASIO4ALL, just download the install .exe file and run it. DO NOY UNINSTALL ANY OHER SOUND DRIERS or it will not work. Asio4all is a "wrapper" that converts your existing Windows Sound drivers to run like ASIO drivers. If you uninstall your existing drivers, you will have no sound in any mode.

Yeah I agree with Mac. To solve this (in Windows 8) go to Control Panel - Hardware and Sound - Manage Audio Devices - highlight the default device and select Properties.

Then select Advanced and disable (uncheck the two radio boxes) that say:

Allow Applications to take exclusive control of this device
Give exclusive mode applications priority

This will then unlock the device to be used wherever and whenever. It is also a good idea to repeat the process on the Recording tab as well.

OK... I'll give this a try..

I have Windows 7 64 bit. I recently had a new mother board installed. It is a "MSI 970A-G43". Under Specifications on the box regarding Audio: 8-channel (7.1) HD audio subsystem.

I do have some audio with my computer. If I play a CD and I use my program "Transcribe", the sound is great. Likewise, there is audio when I'm on the internet. There is just no sound with BIAB except for the intro "click track".

I spent 1 hour yesterday with Yamaha-Steinberg support reinstalling their ASIO driver and was told that it is now working.

In BIAB Midi?Audio driver set up, this is what I have:
Midi input driver:
LoopBe internal MIDI
Midi Output driver:
LoopBe internal MID
Microsoft midi mapper
Microsoft GS wavetable Synth

Under ASIO devices, I have the following:
ASIO DirectX Full Duplex
ASIO4ALL v. 2
Generic Low Latency ASIO driver
Yamaha Steinberg USB ASIO

I have tried every combination of checking boxes I can think of... I'm sure I've missed some... I hope! :-)

What did I miss?

Thanks.. Tom

You don't have a synth installed. The MS GS wavetable won't work.

In your Biab install files see the Coyote Wavatable synth and install it. It uses the soundset from your built in MS wavetable but it includes the code necessary for it to work with Biab as a DXi synth. Biab must have a DXi synth. That's what you're missing.

Do you use any other synth for your midi sounds? That Coyote basic synth is pretty weak, few use it for sound but PG put it there so a new user has at least some sound out of the box. They still include the much better Roland VSC but it's old and has not been updated to run on a 64 bit system so it's rapidly fading out for use.

Also, this is for any other new people reading this. You must include all this detail about your computer and config in your original post. Otherwise you're just wasting everybody's time.

Bob, the microsoft wavetable synth should work if highlighted. There will be latency when attempting to play it in realtime with a MIDI controller as input, but it should play back BB songs just fine.

Besides that, he stated that he tried all the other MIDI options as well and no sound.

Tom, have you tried this?

Before starting up BB, go to the bb folder and locate the following files and drag them OUT of the folder:

Quote:
93. How can I return Band-in-a-Box to the factory settings?

Band-in-a-Box 2010 or higher uses the files listed below for configuration. If you want to restore Band-in-a-Box to the factory settings, you can delete or rename these files. The next time you launch Band-in-a-Box, new configuration files will be created. This can help solve or troubleshoot odd and unexplainable problems you are having with the program. The files are found in the root Band-in-a-Box folder, usually C:\bb, and can easily be found by sorting the files in the bb folder by 'date modified'.

Important: You must have Band-in-a-Box closed when you do this, or else it won't work.

We recommend renaming the files (rather than deleting them) or saving a copy of them somewhere else on your hard drive so that you have a backup of your old configuration. For example, you could rename intrface.bbw to intrface.old. Later, if you find that you need to restore your previous settings, you can delete the new intrface.bbw file that Band-in-a-Box will have created, and rename intrface.old to intrface.bbw. Note that Band-in-a-Box 2009 and higher have an easier method of saving your settings, which wouldn't require you to save a copy of your intrface file. You can simply go to the Opt. menu and select Save Preferences As. Later, you can reload those preferences by selecting Opt. | Open Preferences.

An alternative way of restoring all factory defaults, is to simply reinstall Band-in-a-Box to a new folder. One way of doing this is to rename your current Band-in-a-Box folder to '\bb_old', then reinstall the program to the default '\bb' folder. Note that reinstalling Band-in-a-Box to the SAME folder will not return the program to factory settings, because Band-in-a-Box doesn't change the configuration files when you reinstall it.

intrface.bbw. This file contains most of the global Band-in-a-Box settings in the Opt. | Preferences dialogs, and a list of the most recently accessed song and style files.

MySetup.DK. This file contains the settings in the following dialogs.:
Opt.| Preferences | Channels (default MIDI channels, patches, volumes, reverb, chorus, bank)
Opt. | Preferences | Patch Map
Opt. | Preferences | Drum Kit
Opt. | Utilities | Make an Advanced Patch Map
Opt. | Preferences | Fav. Patch

The two files above contain most of your program settings; it is USUALLY only necessary to delete those two files to solve most problem.

Hmmm, can't remember for sure now but I don't think you're correct. Remember why PG came up with the Coyote WT in the first place? It was because so many people had 64 bit machines and would not have the ability to hear anything if they didn't already have a synth to use. That's the same reason they included the VSC. That certainly implies to me that the MS Wavetable by itself won't work.

Tommy, I'm not positive if the Coyote was included with 2011 or if it came out with the mid year 2011.5 release. If you don't have 2011.5 just go to the upgrade screen and download and install it, it's free to you and I know the Coyote is part of 2011.5. Don't worry if me or Mac is correct or not I would just upgrade to 2011.5 install the Coyote Wavetable, select it as your synth and see if that works.

I remember it well.

The problem you cite was NEVER a problem with the microsoft synth.

It was a problem with the old VSC - Edirol/Roland's Virtual Sound Canvas - that ships free with BiaB but only works on 32 bit systems.

That aside, the microsoft wavetable ships with the OS.

It is not installed afterwards by the user.

Therefore, if the OS is invoking the microsoft wavetable synth as one of the standard listed MIDI playback options, it will indeed work with the OS.

Microsoft Wavetable Synth is the ONLY way that any version of Windows can play back standard MIDI files right out of the box, and all versions can do that, 32 or 64 bit. The Windows Media Player, in standard default, plays MIDI files using the Microsoft Wavetable Synth as the sound source. So can BiaB.

Notice the terminology, Bob, "standard" MIDI synth.

The Coyote is a "DXi" MIDI synth.

Two different things that, while both make MIDI controlled sounds, operate in entirely different fashion, actually.

Mac...This quote from from above caught my eye and I tried it with SUCCESS:

You can simply go to the Opt. menu and select Save Preferences As. Later, you can reload those preferences by selecting Opt. | Open Preferences."

Since I have BIAB 2011, I tried it. When I opened Ops,, etc., it had 3 saved settings. I saved my current setting as #4 and opened #1. Then closed and re-opened the program and ... wala... it now seems to work. So I'll continue to play with it to see what happens. I have no idea what drive I'm using right now or if I want to use the ASIO (Steinberg) driver I have installed... later for that I guess... Thanks to all for putting up with me... maybe I'm on my way to more BIAB enjoyment! Tom
