A simple Google yield this statistic: "Using new and improved statistical models, CDC scientists estimate that an average of 36,000 people (up from 20,000 in previous estimates) die from influenza-related complications each year in the United States. In addition, about 11,000 people die per year from respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a virus that causes upper and lower respiratory tract infections primarily in young children and older adults. "

Given the US population, more likely old age will get us all then the swine flu. Especially given that Obama will be pumping 1.3 B into it irradication.

Cheers.

A swine flu.

Pigs were flying?

I heard people use that phrase instead of hell freezing over. Of course where I live we have 9 months of winter and 3 months of bad dog sledding. So hell freezin' over is a notion we understand.

Flyin' pigs, who'd a thunk it.

I think Rhysard is going to throttle his PC. I wanted to do that to one of my sons a few times, but he's still a part time millonaire without any cash or credit. hm...

Spent the afternoon at the hospital waiting for Fion Kennedy, my grandson. Little begger is waiting until tomorrow or Beltaine. I'd better check the moon, might have to put up some branches over the door. Bad luck if the Colonsay bride and the Fion grandson get the same birthday. She who must be obeyed knows yer musik theory, 10 years worth. I can't even drop the tied note or she's all over me. Play it like it's written, not what you want...darn.....

Maybe Fion wil be more fun, I can teach him jello is a substance Mom thinks is funny when it's in yer hair. My son just texted me from the hospital and says, Gramps, the kid is waiting until the middle of the night. I need my beauty sleep eh?

Bet you can get a great deal on a Mexican vacation about now.

Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax--
Of cabbages--and kings--
And why the sea is boiling hot--
And whether pigs have wings."

Keep it in perspective.
Says here that you are far more likely to die from your pyjamas catching fire
"Ignition or melting of nightwear = 6" than from H1N1...at the moment

Bear in mind that nothing sells media and media space better than a good scare story.
The financial crisis/recession is old news now so our informers in the media have to think of something else.

Did anyone else see that box on the MSN home screen on Monday entitled something like "World waits for spread for Swine Flu".
If they'd had more space, they could have written:
"We had been hoping for a truly exponential increase in the number of cases over the weekend and had been keeping this space especially for that. Now that hasn't happened we don't know what to write"

As for practical course of action, Mac is absolutely right.
But I live like that anyway:
- always wash my hands before eating/as soon as possible after shaking hands with someone (which is pretty well all the time here in France...)
- never touch any surface on the public transport network and avoid crowded train compartments/buses. In fact apart from in the summer, I always wear gloves on public transport.
- (and this is the really important one which is too often ignored) avoid touching your own eyes/nose/mouth unless you've just washed your hands.

I generally get between 0 and 2 common colds/year despite using public transport around 6 times/week.

All the folks older than me in my family spent their times of farms.

Washing you hands was done under a cold water pump, just before a meal.

All my 'vacations' were on farms, working, until I was 16 when I went to Montreal for the summer.

My Uncle was a doctor with a large herd of breeding beef cattle. I always arrived to muck out the winter accumulation of stuff on which fresh straw was thrown daily. 3 feet deep. The decomposition heated the barn and the animals.

Now 77 and still working my Doc uncle claims we live in to sterile an environment. Less allergies and illness amongst those who get some bacteria into them.

You had to eat a peck of dirt before you died was the expression, and the new reality is that no one is building up resistance any longer. \

At least all the stuff that's wrong with me is genetic. Both forms of arthritis, hypertension, and osteoporosis. Hm....

Well, I just got the call, the first grandson is 1 to 3 hours away and I'm waiting to have a coffee and I'm off see Fion, who I'm sure to call Finnigan.

And wash out my eyeballs.

I heard from a friend that the first sign that you have Swine flu is you start growing a curly tail!

Keep little bottle of alcohol based hand gel with you and use it in addition to or when hand washing is not possible. I get the giant bottle (four bucks at Walgreens) and refill my little bottle (99 cents at Walgreens) that fits in my pocket.
Pretty neat stuff not too stinky and doesn't dry out your hands.

Heck Man,

I like my hands dry for guitar playing, especially in hot and humid South Louisiana.

It evaporates in a few seconds - alcohol based. Danny you could just use plain old alcohol if you need too.

Down here in Louisiana we have an all natural sauna - just go out on the porch for five minutes.

I go for Macs adwice.
If the flu reach you, it will reach you if you have panic and it will reach you if you stay calm.
There is no place to run, so it is better to stay calm. With common sence and a little help from above we hopefully stay clear.
Best regards
Tono

Don, I'm with you, the flu or any infection will probably kill me. But they say that this strain of virus seems to affect young healthy adults with a good immune system. If so that's better nerws for people like us.

Occasionally glancing up through the rain, wondering which of the buggers to blame, and watching... For pigs on the wing
