Your thinking is on the right track.

It is possible for us to make our own RealDrum styles, either from our own recorded audio files, or we can use existing RealDrum file and create a new one from it that contains just exactly what we want to hear out of the existing sample set.

pgmusic has created a tutorial page on how that is accomplished:

Once you have managed to "roll your own" RealDrum style that has just that kick on the 4 beats in it and nothing else, you can use the Bar Settings dialog window to change styles to and from that custom Realdrum at the bars in the song where you need just the kick and the bars where you need the full kit.

I think it is a good idea to select a realdrum style that already has the kick in it for the entire project, then generate your custom realdrum kick from the same source such that the sound of the kick does not abruptly change when invoking the custom style.
