The problem comes in when you record an audio track such as a guitar amp with a certain amount of hum. That hum is boosted, as you said, relative to the track,...
The Audio Engineer wouldn't classify that as noise in the sense of Signal to Noise Ratio. Anything actually recorded by the mic would not fall into the Noise category, it is Signal at that point. The kind of Noise we reference when speaking of Signal to Noise Ratio is the Thermal Noise of circuitry in preamps, processing and A to D circuitry. Such should indeed be minimal in the well designed equipments. Noise such as the hum from a guitar amp should really be tackled at the source, which is the amp, pickups, location of same, etc. Vary common for single coil pups in proximity to computer monitors to pick up and amplify the scan rates and switching power of those things. Sometimes the home recordist can greatly reduce that kind of buzz by merely turning the guitar's orientation 90 degrees from the loudest pickup point as regards the monitor. Sometimes more distance away from the source of the noise is what has to happen. In rarer cases, it may be a technical or electrical problem with the particular amp or guitar and this can often be corrected. --Mac

Frank, you mentioned being an older person, well I'm up there too. 84 as of Oct. 24th, but still doing the odd gig, duo's trio's, all using backing tracks created in P G products. I am trying to do a better job using "Real Tracks". Thanks again...Hank Hi Rutabago, By your standards I'm just a young whipper snapper. I'll turn 56 next month. But I figure I have a lot of miles on me - especially when it comes to my memory. After luekemia, high dosage chemo, and a bone marrow transplant my memory just doesn't seem the same. Btw, it all worked and I'm doing well now.

In digital music that noise floor is so far below the music that it's basically non-existant. And with modern circuitry, the internal noise is extremely low as well.... certainly nothing like it was in the days of vacuum tube circuitry.

.... certainly nothing like it was in the days of vacuum tube circuitry. That is not the case either. Vacuum tube technology, when implemented as to concerns of noise, can surpass silicon solid state in the category of thermal noise. The many great tube driven recording mic preamps, touting balanced transformer input and output, stand as only one example of what can be done with the technology. High End tape recorders of the era are another example. The hiss wasn't due to the tube circuitry, it was inherent in the magnetic tape recording process. --Mac

This forum is packed with great, informative & helpful people. Mostly, we know nothing of their daily lives & the battles they are fighting. Yours thank goodness is a battle won, & you still have many good years ahead. For myself, I feel I am one of the lucky ones & am grateful every day. I know though that without my doctor & pharmacist I probably would not still be here. Shake me & I would sound like a pair of maracas what with BP, Blood thinners, prostate etc. etc. pills. My hope is that I will still be here & posting my occasional problems & all you folk will be responding for years to come....Hank
PS Using the decibel settings under gain changes is working out fine..H

Yes there is a lot of information and helpful folks here. I also really enjoy listening to the posts in the showcase section.
It's true we don't get to learn much about many of the members daily lives. There is a certain amount of anonymity on the internet. I prefer not to be anonymous, but there are two sides to that coin and I understand why many prefer it. My openness might bite me in the butt some day.
