Well I plugged the new G&L Tele Bluesboy into my Bose system yesterday and five hours later I literally had to be dragged away from it. Man this thing felt and played like I had been playing it for years. Now I can finally get he sound I like for live gigs spanning many genres with one axe. It is also lighter than the Strat, a little heavier than the Gibby (which is safely stored now) but all in all very comfortable on the shoulder.
Scott, thanks for the initial post, man you saved me 800 plus as I was ready to pull the trigger on the Fender Tele. Now I have the same look and feel with a combination of pickups that fits my playlist like a glove, and still have some money in the bank! (don't tell mean old Linda :>)
Mac, thanks for the background re: Leo Fender and G&L in general, it was very helpful to me while making my final decision.

My ES-335 isn't a desrible dot neck either good thing too since, for mine it's too late to "leave it at home."
It's a '66 ES-335TD Walnut finish. According to Gibson their shipping records say it was shipped to the original stocking/selling dealer in PA in '68, where it sat until I bought it new in Oct '69. It went everywhere I went: Taiwan, Viet Nam, Thailand, and on one of the supply sortie's I crew supplemented out of U-Tapao Thailand into Phnom Penh during the siege there by the Khmer Rouge (now that was just so I could say it was in Cambodia at one time!), Philippines, a lot of the U.S. and a quick out and back to Brussels. It now resides in the high desert of New Mexico where my wife will probably sell it in a garage sell for $100 when I die, along with all my amps, synths, guns, slide rules ….. (but I won’t care at that point).
It is still in very good to excellent shape despite its having been in numerous uncontroled environments (hot humid, hot very, very, very humid, cold dry, cold very, very dry, hot and very dry). One exception, hairline finish cracks front and back caused by its MAIDEN MACAIR charter flight to Taiwan, in as it turns out a poorly temp/pressure controlled cargo bay. I was sick when I opened the case in Taipai, had I had my firearms well...).
It has original everything expect strings and bridge. It had nylon saddles in the tune-o-matic bridge, I have always liked that softer tone but string breakage all these years was driving me nuts. I have always been heavy handed and do really heavy string bends/vibrato so about 10 years ago I swapped out with another tune-o-matic bridge with Graphtech saddles, premature string breakage solved and tone unchanged (I still have original bridge).
FYI: Only reason I list any dates is the Walnut finish. The Blue book, and other sources, say walnut wasn't available until 1969. However, all other indicators say it was '66 mfg (i.e., SN 8556xx, oval orange sticker [but sans "Union Made" says indictaes it was a '59-'64??], and other "markers" all indicate mfg prior to '69. Finally, the fact that Gibson is the one who claims (I have the email) it was shipped in 1968, not me, seems to be at odds with when a Walnut finish was or was not supposedly available. I still have my original dated receipt. Just shows things in the mid-'60s at Gibson were somewhat uncontrolled on the production floor.

Hey Larry,
The dirty little secret is that Gibson, like many other muical instrument mfrs of the era, didn't seem to pay too much particular attention to accession numbering in their serial numbers. There was also a factory fire that destroyed lots of the original hand entry books.
They were also good at going back and using skipped serial numbers at later dates as well.
Yes, very likely your guit was a '69 issue, with earlier serial number applied.
Sounds like a great axe, though, and I love the history of travel.
I used to gig with a Navy cat who lugged his fullsize String Bass around the world like that during the same era, too. He used to say that there's room somewhere for anything on an aircraft carrier..,.

Back then, it was customary to release next year's model line around the end of the previous year, in time to be in stores for Christmas shoppers. Just as with new cars. If you think Gibson is bad, Fender was worse. They would dump all the serial numbered neck plates into one steel drawer and the builders would pull 'em out at random. And when the drawer looked like it was getting low on plates, they'd order up a new batch - and dump 'em right on top of the remaining old numbers. That's why we pull the neck on old Strats and Teles, Jaguars, etc. and see who actually wrote in pencil there, a much better dating method. And, of course, those few guits that happen to have Leo's handprinted sig inside go for inordinately higher prices these days. And Danny

Larry As well she should. I've an old Air Force buddy who always broke his new cars in HARD. Ignoring all that jazz in the manuals and even conventional wisdom, he would pick up a brand new car from the showroom and immediately head out on leave, a cross-country highway trip with the pedal to the metal all the way home. I was with him in '72 when he picked up a brand new Toyota Corolla and pulled that stunt all the way to his home in Arkansas from Colo Springs. Coming down Raton Pass, he kept the poor thing in the red all the way. Ditto. That car ran like a top for years. I did convince him to change the oil when we got to Arkansas, though. His cars seemed to outlast everybody else's, with far less drivetrain problems along the way. Go figure. --Mac

The original cut of the movie Apollo 13 had a scene in it where an engineer was shown breaking out a digital calculator that had not been invented or at least marketed yet.

I'd probably better start with logarithms (duh? a what?) and explain what a CRC handbook is!
I really do collect slide rules, and actually try and stay semi-proficient with them (keeps head in shape).
