Hello forum, I recently had to reinstall Biab & RB after my C drive died from an infection. The programs are working fine for the most part but there's some annoying things going on in Biab(2011(319))which I would like to fix but don't really know where to start. Since the reinstall: 1: Songs usually start with a 'hung' MIDI note that makes everything rather muddy until I hit the Panic button. 2: There's no sound when I try to use my ear training module. I think everything is present visually. 3: My master tuning module no longer works(it did previously, same soundcard). There's no sound when I hit the "Sound note'A'" button and no change in pitch when I input a value. 4: I'm having trouble with rendering to WAV and WMA files, at least intermittently; text comes up saying the file is successfully rendered but the resultant audio plays OK for roughly 10 seconds, then some or all of the instruments drop out, leaving bits and pieces of sound or just silence for the rest of the track. 5: When I stop a song there's a short 'radio-static' white noise sort of sound instead of the simple cessation of sound that Biab usually manages quite well. This last is no big deal but might serve as a clue about what's going on. Any helpful insights re my problems would be much appreciated. Clinton.

When your C drive died, you must have installed everything again: operating system, programs and drivers. Check your drivers to make sure you have the latest for your devices, particularly your sound card.

Hello Matt, Thanks for jumping in and offering a suggestion. In the meantime I looked at some correspondence I had with PG tech support people (God bless 'em) years ago on account of a vague memory of something like this happening ages ago, and it turns out the advice I got then, ie make sure your "Asio always on" checkbox is ticked, is exactly what I needed to do. Not sure about the rendering problem yet, I haven't checked that, but the other items in my list are resolved. And yes I did have to install everything again, or should I say my fastidious and thoroughly computer-literate friend did. Every computer user who can't quite do for themselves should have a Richard in their life, and I'm one of the lucky ones. Thanks again, Clinton.

I'm glad that your problem is solved. It seems odd to me that ASIO Always On is related to the symptoms you listed. If true, this is certainly important info for us to know for helping others in the future.

That info regarding the ASIO Always On is known, Matt.
It depends upon which sound device and its drivers, though, so some may have to set it to ON and others may have to set it to OFF.
I've posted this as a solution that has worked for a few posters.

Great, thanks Mac. Would you consider requesting a sticky for that, perhaps in the Recording forum?

Stickies don't work, next person w/same problem will just post anew anyway.
And now that we have the ShoutBox, some have started trying to get fixes for problems over there, no less.

What I was thinking is, the sticky isn't for the next person with the problem. It's for those of us who respond. I have no idea why this "ASIO Always On" setting would have the effect described, much less for which sound devices it occurs. If you know, would you please post that? Thanks.

Stickies are handy for the long term users here who help others. If you remember that a certain issue is addressed well in a sticky, you can simply post that link and not have to reiterate the issue time after time.
In another forum I used the link to the sticky on setting up and using USB mics quite often.
You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

What I was thinking is, the sticky isn't for the next person with the problem. It's for those of us who respond. I have no idea why this "ASIO Always On" setting would have the effect described, much less for which sound devices it occurs. If you know, would you please post that? Thanks. It would take me a long time to inestigate and post all the different sound devices and their drivers, that's asking too much and the situation is a dynamic subject to change as new items are released, old ones are supported - or not - so let's just go with a generic explanation. There are now two kinds of ASIO. The original ASIO was basically a "one man dog" in the sense that once an audio program captured the driver, it would not and could not share with another open audio program. This was done intentionally, by design, because the whole concept of the original Steinberg ASIO sound drivers were to create a "sacrosanct" digital path from disk to sound device and vice verse. No interruptions from programs that call interrupts, or other background proggie stuff. Not only was ASIO designed for that lower latency that almost all home recordists will tout, it was also designed for that uninterrupted bit stream. This is why we have to tell folks that are trying to work with two audio recording programs at the same time, with both open, to change BB, for example, to MME Windows Sound drivers while their DAW stays with the ASIO drivers. But development is never a static situation, and today we can find ASIO2 sound drivers. ASIO2 can allow for two separate programs to both access the ASIO drivers simultaneously. That said, ASIO2 still may or may not work in that fashion for everyone, likely due to OS choice, OS Setting variations and maybe some other things as well. The "ASIO Always On" setting in the PGMusic program allows for you to tell the program whether or not to allow release of the ASIO driver for use by another program at the same time. But it doesn't always work with all programs and all machines and systems, or so it seems from the reports of those on this forum who have had issues from time to time. If you have to make a Sticky about the issue, likely a good thing to do is just post that the user with problems should try that setting both ways to see which setting, True or False, allows them to record or otherwise may solve the issue at hand. One of the big problems concerning use or not of ASIO drivers is the common perception that ASIO is the "Pro" choice and that ASIO sound drivers can sound "better" or have higher fidelity than the Windows Sound Drivers. That is not true at all. Both kinds of sound drivers create the same PCM Digital Audio (.wav if its a PC) file. Then there are all those who try to tell us that they are so keen in hearing that they can actually hear the difference when recording if the latency is down below the 25mS mark. Ignore them, it can and has been proven empirically numerous times that the human hearing that consists of ears, central nervous system and brain response just does not have the type of resolution needed to make that claim. Neither does the speed of playing music. --Mac --Mac
