For some time I have been looking to see if I can buy a software package that will allow me to transcribe chord charts in the vein of Nashville style. You know: numbers, slash marks, etc.

Does anyone know if there is a software out there that can do that? I have Finale. But, they require you to write melody notes before you can insert a chord over the note. That is not what I am looking for. I want to be able to chart something on my PC that I can store for future needs rather than having to manually write the charts out every time I need them.

P.S. if PG Music would design that as an add on to their chord chart design, I would be willing to buy it as an add on! I can do it with chords using the current format. The reason I like the Nashville is for transpositional reasons.

Ricke,

It's possible to use Nashville numbers on the chord sheet view of BIAB. These could then be printed without staff lines to obtain a chord sheet. Would that do the job you want?

Below is the is an image of the chord sheet view using Nashville numbers.

To change to Nashville numbers, simply click on the shortcut button I've highlighted below.

Regards,
Noel

As Noel96 points out, Band in a Box has been able to utilize Nashville Notation of chords for a long time - and it works a treat.

Be careful, bro, I learned a long time ago that just because someone happens to love playing a certain genre that is rather simple in musical construct does not mean that they cannot play the heck out of some of the other, much more difficult to understand and execute musics.

Going back years now, I'll never forget the day I found out that the cats in that "country" band could blow all of Charlie Parker's bebop standards - and solo in correct bebop fashion on them, as well. Even on Dobro. Or fivestring banjo.

I've met certain musician types who frown or otherwise make fun of use of Nashville Notation. Likely due to their own ignorance on the subject, likely due to their own inability to work with it, which, in actuality is rather easy to use.

And using Nashville Notation makes the art and science of Transposition on the fly a breeze. Cuts studio time something fierce and in the studio, time and money seem to be not a 1 for 1 equivalence at all.

1 unit of lost time seems to translate to 2 or more units of lost money in the studio scenario.

I fully agree which is why I had added the second part to imply these guys can indeed impress...:

Maybe it was the "studio cats" part.

I've known plenty of great players of country music who are "just" the core of the modern journeyman musician, the working musicians.

Of course, if ever confronted with the task, likely most of 'em would be ready and able to do the session cat thing in a heartbeat.

Wow Noel Thanks! I had no idea that was already there. Every tutorial video I have seen in BIAB always uses the standard chords. This solves my problem. Thanks again for the illustration.

Cheers!

Yet another way that BiaB is the best music teaching tool out there.

I recently learned a set of basic gospel/blues changes, and realized that I might be called upon to use them in a variety of keys. I learned a lot by transposing the keys to F, Bb, G, Eb and so on. I got close to real mastery when I switched to Nashville notation and required myself to call the correct changes in different keys using just one set of numbers. It was a challenge, and very satisfying when I started to get fluent with it.

I am not at the point of being able to play them in all 12 keys yet, but that will be my ultimate goal.

My favorite concert I've been able to attend so far was Allison Krauss and Union Station, featuring Jerry Douglas.

Little did I know that the 'featuring' part meant that while A.K. and U.S. took a mid-show break, Jerry Douglas would put on a psychadelic guitar-hero instrumental rock show using electrified dobro for over 1/2 hour. I'm pretty sure Jerry Douglas could play any instrument he set his mind to with aplomb.

In addition to ridiculous instrumentalist talent featured throughout the entire show, it was the best engineered live show I've ever attended from a sound quality standpoint.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
