If I lower the Track Buffers in Prefs to the very min. It works fine.
Sounds like it is preset only to work in Burst mode.

Sounds like it is preset only to work in Burst mode. OK. So how do you get it out of burst mode?Or can you? Thanks Mac

Before going into all that, which may be a case where the thing is hardwired by the circuit board inside the box where the actual disk plugs, do this:
Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager (with the disk already plugged in and recognized, of course) and take a look at its Properties, etc. make sure it has not been reverted to PIO mode, something XP just seems to do for no particular real reason, make sure it is running in DMA mode.
If its in any mode other than DMA, email me. Or PM with your addy. I have scripts for these things, don't quibble around with manual methods, registry edits, etc. One click and BAM.

Well if I remember corectly being an external device leaves me at the mercy of that device. In this case a USB device. So the choice between PIO or DMA is not an option?
