I did recently have to open up a near new external drive to investigate for a doctor friend I sometimes consult for about his office computer mess. This was one of the el cheapo offbrands, "USB3" all over the outside of the box. And the connect circuits inside the little thing really are. But the 500gb disk they stuck in there was one of the slowest ATA 5400s imaginable.

If you get the time, John, you may want to pop the case, read the mfr and mod number off of the drive itself and do some web investigation.

Depedning on brand, there also may be a way to contact actual drive mfr and get a replacement sent under warranty...
