Does BIAB register itself with Windows(XP) and show up in the Add/Remove Programs list?

It doesn't show up in mine.

What happens exactly when you upgrade your BIAB?

Does BIAB throw the new version in the same folder as the old one?

What does it do with the older .dll's and other files?

Does it leave them there, delete them....?

TIA

Band in a Box program itself, BBW.exe, does not write to the Windows Registry and therefore can theoretically run standalone.

BUT - it is important to install at least the PGMusic Fonts, PG Plugins and whatever softsynths to your system on the C: drive in order to use those things. They take up very little disk space.

While it is possible to redirect the Installer to put the bb folder into your Program Files folder, even with good old XP I recommend not doing that, accept the default of C:/bb at install, if you want the entire shebang on the C drive. Be advised that most older machines running XP might not have a very large C drive in them, though, and the RealInstruments indeed take disk space.

I always install new versions right overtop of old version. That way, any and all songfiles and folders I've had and have been using and working on remain intact and ready to use as before.

BB has its own Backups file creation system that makes it possible to revert to the older version, or even revert to several or more versions back if you ever so desire, I have never had to do that for any reason in all these years.

While I cannot say definitively what bb installer does with all of them, I'm fairly certain that its handling of such .dll files is apropos. Perhaps if there is a newer version of a .dll that bb absolutely needs in order to do whatever, it does install that, but since both files would have the same filename and extension, it would simply overwrite that file.

I don't think the BB installer deletes any .dlls, though, and that's because I've run softwares in the past that would pop up a little window asking me if it is okay to delete that file or not. Even XP has that feature built in, just not as comprehensive, but if Windows detects an attempt by a proggie to delete a .dll, it too should bring up a window and tell you that the .dll in question may be needed by other programs, I just tell it to keep the file if that happens. They are very small in size. Bear in mind that I don't recall ever seeing that window come up when installing copies of BB since Win95.

Have Fun,

OK, so what happens if we want to uninstall BIAB for whatever reason? What is the correct way to do this, so Windows won't mind?

When I installed BIAB there was a window asking if I want to install the Fonts. I checked it off and said yes.
Now BIAB complains that the fonts aren't there.
I did a re-install and just checked off "Install Fonts".
It worked once or twice, but now it can't see the fonts again.

And if it overwrites the file, how are you able to go back to a previous version of BIAB (it would require the older .dll with the same name)?

I don't think Windows would do this for a program such as BIAB that hasn't registered itself with Windows.

Just delete the entire c:/ bb folder. Band in a Box gone.

The Add/Remove Control Panel applet can be used to uninstall PG Plugins and also any DXi synth installed, if desired. Since those write to the registry, they will show up there.

I've never seen that happen in XP, but my first thing I'd do if it did is a full Reboot of the computer. Sometimes it takes that after installing programs. When it reboots, it puts all the digital ducks in a row, so to speak. So try the reboot of Windows.

That's not how the programming protocol works. A DLL of the same name, but with newer enhancements added should still do everything the older one did, it just adds something else that was found to be needed after user bug reports were identified. So that .dll of the same name should work with any programs that previously needed it. I've been using BiaB for Windows since it came out. That's over a decade, going on two. I've never once encountered a problem with this. So rest easy.

OK I'm back in business, at least for the time being. smile

I re-installed the BIAB fonts and can now get into the Lead Sheet/Notation window.

Questions:

1. How do I turn off the chord diagram from the Lead Sheet?

2. How do I edit a chord diagram so it shows the fingering I want?

TIA
