Hey BiaB Club! I was wondering if there are some SGU files from the people that really know how to create a great song in band in a box that we can download? First what does that acronym stand for? I am trying find it but can't. Anyway if I can get some of those files from people that really know this program maybe I can analyze the settings and learn from them. I know this this program and all the real tracks in the hands of the experienced can do some wonderful things. I hope to be there in a year with some study.

SlyRuby,

If you have a look in the \bb folder, you'll find lots of sub-folders that have songs in them: folk, jazz, blues, classical.

Also, when you click on a style, it's possible to load a demo song. This is the one I tend to use a great deal.

Click on "Load Song Demo" and then exit back to BIAB. A song will be loaded in. All you need to do is to generate the song and go.

Regards,
Noel

Thanks Noel, I found them. though when I do load them they can't find the instruments. I have the hard drive being shipped in now I hope. So my question is how do I set up all my Real Tracks and every instrument and file so that BiaB find everything I bought? Do I have to put them in specific directories? Maybe there is a page somewhere to show me how to set it all up. I bought the complete collection in Wave Files. I want to connect them all up to this already installed BiaB I have now on my system. Once I discover how to set this all up I am going to have a field day on these Real Tracks for months discovering all there is to offer.

Hi Sly Ruby,

If everything was installed to its default directory, BIAB will find it. What directory did you install BIAB to?

When you say that they 'can't find the instruments', that could mean that there are either aspects of the program that are not yet installed or that the directory paths are wrong.

When you downloaded BIAB, did you download and install all the files or did you decide to wait until some arrive on the hard drive?

Regards,
Noel

Noel has a good question. If you bought the audiophile version, and haven't received the hard drive yet, then downloading that is hundreds of gigabytes to get everything. That could take all day for some folks. When you get the hard drive and run the setup program, you have four choices, and if you let BIAB do the install, it will find everything.

There are meanings for the acronym SGU, MGU etc. The only ones that are important to know are that a new song with only chords has S, and if you add a melody, it changes to M. Thus you could have two versions of a song with the same name, and use one for music minus one, for example on a gig.

Google for Band in a Box songs and you should find a number of sources of song files to download. There are a lot in a Band in a Box Yahoo users group, once you join.

I don't know about others, but I have trouble remembering so many questions in one post. If you create separate threads, it may be easier for us to answer thoroughly.

Not really an acronym, the file suffixes for BB songfiles do indicate what kind of songfile each one is.

The ".sgu" suffix, the s stands for "Song" - and indicates a songfile in which there is no specified Melody entered onto the Melody track.

The ".mgu" suffix indicates a songfile that has that Melody entered onto the Melody track. That would be a MIDI Melody.

When you have questions about Band in a Box, you can get many answers a lot faster by visiting the FAQ page here. Be advised that a FAQ for 2014 has yet to be written, but the good news is that a lot of situations for usage and knowledge such as this are the same for the older FAQs.

All of my Forum Posts here list the Hotlink to the PGMusic FAW pages in my dot.sig at the bottom of each of my posts.

Bookmark the link, and learn how to use the ctrl-f on the displayed page to rapidly search the page for something. In this case, entering ".sgu" and using the arrow key would certainly get you to the FAQ that explains each of the BB suffixes. There are more than just two...

Assuming you've installed BB in total or already have the full version in hand from shipping, you already have the BEST songfiles for that, written at PGMusic by the PGMusic experts, in the form of the Demo Songs.

The RealTracks Demo Songs folders contain them all as full BB files. Whenever a new version of BB is released, I like to spend pleasant time using the Jukebox feature to navigate to each of the new RealTracks demosong folders and set the Jukebox to play them all in a row, once each, without repeating at end of list. That is done by simply UNchecking all of the defaults at LH side of Jukebox window and then using the dropdown slot at bottom to Browse to a folder. I run these songs in the backround while doing things like Posting here. If I here something I really like, I just bop on over to the BB screen and see what it is, make a note of it in notepad with a quick copy 'n paste from the Songtitle window slot, can investigate further at my leisure.

These can also be accessed from the Stylepicker Window, at top right, where, "Load Demo Song" will load the PGMusic Demo Song right onto the Chord Sheet where you can play it back and watch it work, investigate the layout procedures, the indicators, etc. Find something you dig, hit Stop and investigate how it was implemented. Take note of things like the Red box around a Bar Number on the ChordGrid, that would indicate a hidden setting such as Bar Settings.

Have Fun,

The first thing I would say is that I believe you have quite wrongly gained the impression that Band-in-a-Box is difficult to use. It isn't! Read what PG Music say themselves:

"Band-in-a-Box is so easy to use!

Just type in the chords for any song using standard chord symbols (like C, Fm7, or C13b9), choose the style you’d like, and Band-in-a-Box does the rest, automatically generating a complete professional-quality arrangement of piano, bass, drums, guitar, and strings or horns in a wide variety of popular styles plus optional live audio tracks with RealDrums and RealTracks."

Having quoted that, I will concede that it is a huge program and there are many functions and subtleties that even a seasoned user never gets around to using. Also it depends what you are using it for, how many of these you need.

However, it isn't a bad idea to listen to other people's files and there are six other forums on the PG Muisic site where you can do that and read about the techniques they used.

In addition, there are many other websites, webrings and forums where people make their files available for download; one even has a huge archive although it is mainly midi based tracks. Use your search engine to find these.

"Easy" to do can be a relative term.

I can do things with a Trumpet that to many would look rather "easy" - without considering all the years spent practicing the horn.

Band in a Box is much like a musical instrument, we do indeed have to take the time to learn its terminology, controls, etc. plus spend some time practicing the use of Band in a Box before we can do certain thing with it and make it look "easy" to others.

But think of this: If Band in a Box could be mastered in the first session, or even in the first two weeks, it wouldn't be worth much.

My hard drive is down at the post office until Monday. I don't have my files yet. I was just wondering once I get all of my real tracks how will BiaB find them? I just have to know how to set it all up to be found. I guess you are saying you have to install the tracks. I am sure I will figure it out. I don't think you click them and they install do they? Maybe I will just put them in a certain folder or something.

There is a lot of different categories. I guess everything is organized and the folders all named nicely so my BiaB will find them. I am sure it is very simple to figure out. Anyway it will be nice to click on all those example song files and have all of the real tracks for them to be played. Then I can here the potential BiaB.

Hard Drive comes out of the box ready to rock 'n roll.

All you need do is use Explorer to take a look at what's on that drive - and read the READ ME FIRST file that it seems hardly anybody actually reads before doing anything else.

As I wrote above, when you get the hard drive and run the setup program, you have four choices, and if you let BIAB do the install, it will find everything.

Those four choices determine how you use the program. You can even use BIAB with a minimal install, where you run the program with all of its files directly from the hard drive you get from PG Music. In other words, you can install all of it, or some of it, or very little of it to the hard drive in your computer.

And Sly, so you don't have one problem, since you say you know computers well: the only place you should NOT install BIAB is into the /Program Files folder (either one, if you have Windows 7 or 8, 64-bit). I can explain why, but just don't do that, even if your experience tells you that's where it should go. Best to accept the default path offered by the installer.

That is a lot of great information everyone. I will have to go online and put some good Google searches in. I would like to find all the clubs or websites where people give their songs a way. Yes it is overall pretty easy to make some music. But to do it like the pros and put some breaks in and some changes to the instruments in different areas will take time. I have saw the dots after the chords on some. Holds and different things. All this stuff will take me some time to learn. But if I can find some great song files with all these great things added I can always use that file as my template. Change some instruments and styles, then also change some chords. But some of the very tricky breaks well placed I will have them for myself. I will write my song with that track. So yes it is easy to get some music out of Band in a Box but to make some great tracks for my 1st online Album will take a year at least. I think I will take all year on this. Studying. This is a life long hobby now. So I will enjoy learning. Why rush into it all?

I'm not an active member, but if you have a Yahoo account, just search for the Band in a Box user group.

In response to your query, "Are there free song files to download?", I said "There are a lot in a Band in a Box Yahoo users group, once you join."

I do not have anything to do with it; I just visited a few times to see what was there.

I found a huge collection of BiaB songs online. Though they are all many zipped in folders by letters. Then you get into those files and there are more zipped. So it is a lot of work unzipping the things but when I am through I should have a huge collection lol

Oh, yeah welcome to my world! The thing is those files are duplicated on several websites and there's so many of them the people who put those up can't go through them to organize them or check for duplicates. They will sweep up those files from other sites to put on their own. On the one hand you can certainly find thousands of files but you'll also find tons of dups and so much stuff you don't know what it is until you load it and play it. Some of the song titles are completely indecipherable, you just have to play them. But there are some gems in there.

Don't be put off by how bad some of them sound like literally a zither for the melody track or something. You can change the instruments any way you want. Some of the chords may be wrong but that's easy for you to change too. You'll see that some were created by raw amateurs while others were created by real pros and there's no way to tell without loading them up and hitting play.

Let me know what type of stuff you're interested in, I might be able to help you out, you can PM me if you want.

Bob

I agree Bob, the quality of free BIAB files is all over the place. I'd love to see just ONE collection of BIAB files that was put together by someone with discerning ears whose goal was to isolate "the best of the best"

I'd gladly pay money for this collection, because it would save me the time required to sift through thousands of unsorted files.

If somebody out there has lots of time (and good taste), here's an income generating opportunity for you. Given the huge number of BIAB users worldwide, such a collection could become a real cash cow. If you removed the melodies, you could probably sell the collection of chord progressions on ebay.

Thanks Bob. Well I am a singer of Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin and all the rest that sing The Great American Songbook. This is what I have been focusing on in the last year. December of 2012 I started to sing shows in Second Life under the name Jerry Angel. But I recently created a Sly Ruby avatar. Anyway I like to sing on occasion in that Virtual World. There are venues in there to sing at and you get people going to listen to you sing then they dance. Even if it is a small crowd that is ok. One person might have a few people at there home in real life listening. So it is fun.

So I like the Standards. That is a great genre so if I can get a hold of truck-loads of them created by professionals that would be nice. I would like to learn from these files too. Take the very good ones and make them my own. Make some changes here and there. Then write some originals. They make it good for me just starting out with BiaB. They are like a template. Tomorrow I will get my hard drive from the post office. It has been stuck there over the weekend. Then finally I will install all the real tracks. I can't wait to listen to some of these songs that use these files. I think I could be surprised.

Good idea about changing the instruments. A song could be a diamond in the rough. One bad lead instrument and it sounds horrible. Change that and voila! It will sound like a masterpiece. Also I might do some online albums next year. Who knows it might take me at least a year to get something going that sounds good enough. Could take me 3 years all I know lol. But if I do want to license some real Standards on an album instead of writing originals I guess I would have the write to put someone else's track on my album as long as I paid the license on the song. I am not going to want to license anyone's all BiaB song production. I won't know the story on the song I find.

All I can say is BiaB makes for a great hobby even if you don't take your music to any high level in the music business. Just make your own music business. Sell some albums online with your own little record company. Who cares if you sell just one album a month lol. Or you have a fanbase of just a couple hundred around the world that bought your album over a couple years time. I am not worried about fame and fortune. As long as I appreciate my songs and a few more do too great. Keep the dream!!

Ok let me know about any BiaB song productions of the Great American Songbook. Pop and Jazz Standards. I think I have a big collection now. Maybe I will continue to unzip a few more folders tonight. Maybe I will put them all in one folder. They might be in alphabetical order anyway.

Thanks,
Sly
