Noel,

Thanks for all of the help. On my Desktop, all of this works fine (as I expected it would).

I'm going to give this a run-thru on the laptop now. Will reporrt back in a few minutes.

BTW -- I have a PC question. When loading ST, I again got the message that I needed to run "it" (meaning BIAB) with "Run as Administrator". How can I make that a default on my Win7 system?

Back in a few with results from the tests on the laptop......

Bert,

I run Vista here so I'm not absolutely sure but from reading the forums.

I might be wrong but I believe I've seen that people go the \bb folder, locate BBW.EXE, right-click on it, select Properties and then there are some options available (one of which is to run as an administrator).

I'll see if I can find something on the PG Website about this.

Regards,
Noel

Bert,

It seems that "administrator" mode is something I can do on Vista. I obviously wasn't paying attention. (Live and learn!)

Anyway, because I have been running with the User Account Control deactivated for years, I didn't have any need to discover this. Below is a thread that will help.

Does that MEAN that ST works fine? or that ST from inside BIAB works fine?

Also WHICH SOUNDS - "any old random ST sound works fine" or specifically the ones of interest here (the ones in the Band-in-a-Box folder [which really are the HI-Q sounds] )?

Noel,

Following the procedure on the laptop, I see that I don't have ST installed as a VST synth, only as a DXI. So I proceeded with it s DXI.

All piano instruments played successfully. But:

a) I still can't find the HQ files when clicking on "Select Hi-Q Midi Synth Patch....". (Is this a problem?)

b) In the very last step, I had to click on "Default Synth" instead of "Piano" to verify that ST is working. (Is this a problem?

Should re-install ST as a VST?

Thanks!

Larry, On the Desktop, ST from inside BIAB worked fine - just as Noel expected it would. I assume that they were Hi-Q sounds. They are in the Band-in-a Box Folder.

On the laptop, it also works from inside BIAB, but with ST running as a DXI. (I didn't install it as a VST for some reason....Should I?)

Sorry for the dumb questions, but this technical stuff about plug-ins and HQ files baffles me....

I'm running Win7. It looks like I can change security settings for the bbw.exe file under "Properties", so that I (as the user) can run it with full privileges.

I'll give that a try.

Bert,

Regarding (a), that's very strange behaviour. Are the files available to load manually from the "Band In A Box" subfolder under the "program files\IK Multimedia\Instruments" folder?

Also, what directory do you have BIAB installed to on you laptop?

Regarding (b), it sounds as though ST was installed in the "Default" rather than the "Piano" position. It's not a problem. It does mean, though, that if you have other midi tracks, you probably won't hear them because anything in the "Default" position works for all tracks and in ST, it's necessary to assign instruments to each track. (That's why I put Coyote WT on the default track.)

Just to confirm, when you monitored the volume was that in ST or Coyote WT?

Regards,
Noel

My BIAB is installed in d:\bb

Regarding a) - Yes, all of the Hi-Q files can be found in Windows Explorer in the Program files(x86)\IK Multimedia\Instruments\Band-in-a-Box subfolder. Each Hi-Q file is 776Kb, is that correct? However, these files are all directly in the Band-in-a-Box subfolder. That subfolder also contains other subfolders (ie - Bass, Drums, Guitar, Piano, etc....) Should the Hi-Q files be distributed among those subfolders instead? Currently, those subfolders folders contain STIP, STH,STI and STW files.

WhenI monitored the volume, I was in ST, not Coyote.

Thanks.

Bert,

When I look in my "Band In A Box" subfolder, this is what I see ...

... and when I look in one of the folders off this, this is what I see (I've used "Piano" for the example).

Hope this helps,

I suspect that this is your problem.

The various files should be in their own subfolder. The *info.txt files in "\bb\DX Settings" tells files to look in the subfolder for the .stw file.

When I open the file "Hi-Q 001 01 Drums, Acoustic, Rock Kit SampleTank info.txt" in \bb\DX Settinngs, it says ...

  • Drums\Rock Kit.stw

We might be getting close now!

Noel

When I look in my Band-in-a Box subfolder, I see exactly what you do ---- except that a) I have no "Woodwind" folder and b) I also see the all the Hi-Q (.tgs) files plus corresponding .txt files. That's because I manually copied them there in my efforts to get them recognized by SampleTank. I think that I copied them from d\bb\dxsettings.

When I look at one of the subfolders (ie - Piano), I see what you see.

I am a post behind you and Noel so excuse that which you now know

What makes the HI-Q sounds "hi-q" is mainly the SAMPLED data which are not the .tgs files that are only 776 KB. The Hi-Q SOUNDS come from the much larger .STW (sampletank's wave data), the instruments are (machine coded) in the .sti (sampeltank instruments); the .sth files are further information used by sampletank to understand the sound set.

There should be NO .tgs files in your \Band-in-a-box\ folder. While they don't hurt anything being there - they DO NEED to be in your D (or C or whatever drive) :\bb\DX settings folder!
You said last night you copied (moved?) those .tgs and .txt files from the BB\DX setttings folder INTO the \Band-in-a-box\ folder thinking that would help somehow - that's how they ended up there.

And YES the BIAB Hi-Q sounds, as opposed to sound samples that SampleTtank installed when you installed SampleTank itself, are distributed as I explained last night

The 27 BIAB SampleTank "HI-Q" sample sounds are spread over seven (7) sub-directories of \Band-in-a-Box\ called:

\Bass (3 basses)
\Drums (2 kits)
\Guitar (7 types/kinds)
\Piano ( 8 types/kinds of keys)
\Strings( 2 kinds)
\Synth ( 3 kinds)
\World (2 kinds).

And when you were manually picking and clicking sounds within the ST GUI THESE are the sounds you where clicking on - independent of VSTi or DXi.

As to installing the VSTi for ST my suggestion is yes install it. Long term it is more stable, at least inside BIAB. Even though it is the DXi version that BIAB itself "calls" and loads when calling up HI-Q sounds (even if you made the ST VSTi the "Default Synth" and it is running already inside BIAB!)

PS there is no BIAB HI-Q "woodwind" folder. That folder I suspect belongs to SampelTank, or Miroslav, itself as part of its example (terser) library and just got copied there once by accident?

I hope we're getting close! LOL! So - I still don't understand -- Are my Hi-Q files located in the wrong place?

When I open that same file from the same folder, it says the same thing (except there's no little triangle at the beginning of the line).

How do you take/post your screen shots? If I could do that, this process might be easier.

I'll have to continue this tomorrow, as it's getting late here. I'll be shoveling snow early on tomorrow (we're getting our first significant snow of the season overnight), but will be returning here right afterwards to follow up.

I REALLY appreciate your patience and all of the help!

At this point it SEEMS as if ST and the BIAB HI-Q sounds are there and WORKING as long as you manually call them up.

As you've seen from all my suggestions and Noel's and other threads I KNOW I've run out of ideas on this.

I suspect Mac, who seems to have similar issues on his XP machine, at least will work this until he figures it out I know he will share insight if/when he gets some. He is no novice on BAIB (he is/was a beta tester!) , PC's , PC sound and audio, and similar etc. so there ios hope there

But I WOULD now EMAIL PG support and give them a summary of what isn't working and point them to this thread! (tell them to ignore my BS)

Good Luck and if I think of something I'll chime in but......
Larry

NO your ST files are where they need to be at this point (until PG tells you otherwise).

My "…info.txt" file says exact SAME thing and mine work (do not try and figure out or "decode" the info in the "D:\bb\DX Settings"

Hi Larry,

Yes, we've cross-posted again.....

FWIW, the Hi-Q files ARE still located directly under D:\bb\dxsettings. (They are located in the program files(x86)\IK Multimedia\Instruments folder as well.)

Perhaps the clearest way for me to understand this to take corrective action is if you (or Noel?) coould post a listing of exactly what files should be in what folder (bass; Drums; Guitar; Piano etc.) I assume those are distributed throughout the program files(x86)\IK Multimedia\Instruments folder and NOT the d:\bb\dxsettings\ folder?

Also, how do I go about installing the VSTi for ST without having to reinstall everything or use up another ST activation?

Thanks! (I'll continue on this quest tomorrow...)

I'm the only user on my machines, except one, and I always logon as Administrator.

And I do indeed have some sampletank patches listed that don't play, and some that do play.

Mac,

Maybe delayed posting is the issue here, so I apologize ahead of time, but when you say

"And I do indeed have some sampletank patches listed that don't play, and some that do play."

Do you mean it won't play if BIAB inserted as a "Hi-Q" track/part/instrument

Or do you mean you, external and apart from BIAB, you cannot make SampleTank play that sound even if you manually inserted it into a Sampletank part ?
